Hi, my service manual is still packed up from move, and thus cant get to it atm, iam gonna renew the oil in diffs etc.

what oil was that again, trax something or rather....

thnks in advance..

oh and also, what type of grease goes into the top of the knuckle bearings?

box, case and diff all use same according to the manual... castrol HYP-C80W90

i couldnt find any of it when i went to get some last week, so i just got the castrol manual transmission fluid, comes in a 1ltr bottle with a cool spout which makes it easy to fill the box :D

box is about 2.7ltr, transfer is 1.4ltr, and unsure on diffs as i havnt done them yet (maybe while recovering from grand final hangover on sunday.... whos playing again??:P)


i forgot the bearings... book has front hub bearings as castrol HTB grease...

G'day Vanne

80-90 in the transfer and front diff and g/box. If you find itsd to hard to change gears put 75-90 in the g/box instead. Rear diff if LSD still working fill with LS 90 or better. I runn LS 140, have found over the years that nissan like the thicker oil in rear diff, is much tighter. My MK diff has a lot of resistance

As for the knuckle brgs. I DONT grease these for the simple fact that it is easy, over time, to pump the knuckle full of grease.. thus the grease needs somewhere to go and usually come out the knuckle seal.

Just my to cents worth, aslo 20-50 engine oil is great for g/box's. I use this in my 97 rodeo 5sp. (thats what listed for it) make changing when cold so much easier. .

diff c200 1.5 litres
h233b 2.0 litres
h260 2.8 litres They run 80-90 both open and lsd, but lsd run
lsd 80-90

sorry guys, quick reminder where both the drain and empty plugs are for the gearbox and transfer.. iam having a bloody brain blank...

gearbox is on the left side, 2 plugs, square holes. 1/2inch socket will do it. i forget where the transfer ones are, but they are the same size so just have a squiz around

Don't forget to undo the fill plugs before the drain plugs, just in case they are siezed.

thx , doing it now.. i know, i know, iam a lazy git....

just wondering how to tell if my rear end has an lsd and if its still working? Its the stock diff from the factory.

yes your right, you are lazy!!! almost as lazy as me :P


jack up you entire rear end, turn one wheel by hand. if the opposite wheel turns the same way, you have an lsd, if it turns the opposite way, its an open diff.

another way is to jack up one wheel, and see if you can drive off :P that will also tell you if the lsd is shagged....

oh yeah, forgot to mention, my local auto shop dont carry castrol anymore.. WTF... anyhows, got me some Penrite "Manual Gear Oil 80" SAE 80W-85 as listed in the penrite manual. for the trnsfer case and gearbox.. that sound about rite?

well i guess unless its realy crap, its staying as its already in there.

doh! i have some castrol epx80W 90 hanging around, (about 2.5 lts id recon) would that be fine for the rear diff? or do i have to get some lsd stuff???

if its an lsd diff then u need lsd oil, otherwise use the same stuff as you put in your box and case. it doesnt have to be castrol, thats just what the manual recomends coz at the time(maybe even still now) nissan and castrol had a deal. main thing is that the viscosity is correct

I belive the job takes around an hour, Would you like us to pass the hat around till you've got enough money to get a mechanic to do it.
