Hilux straight through exhaust

G’day all

Ok, so I’ve heard that cutting back the exhaust pipe and bypassing the muffler reduces back-pressure and makes a 'nice sounding roar'.

I have a single cab 2.8l diesel lux. No turbo.

How loud is a straight through exhaust setup on a 2.8l lux? Too loud? Harsh sounding?

Anyone have a vid/mp3 of a 2.8l lux with a straight through exhaust setup? Or anything similar sounding.

Is it legal to do this modification in QLD? From what I can gather, the end of the exhaust must be past the last window on the vehicle.

It'll fart like mine does at about 3500rpm and it's got a small hotdog style muffler in it and ends behind the cab it's coping a decent muffler on it soon and also have herd of people Getting done By Qld transport for having less than the std amount of mufflers than the car came out with. So say a hilux std came with one you only need one. A Commodoor comes with 3 you must retain 3 mufflers but also it'll have to be loud to atract attention from the boys in blue

Exhaust systems
Exhaust systems must comply with Queensland legislation which includes the following conditions:

• Exhaust headers (extractors) may be fitted to any motor vehicle, provided:
- they do not foul any part of the steering, suspension, brake or fuel systems
- all fittings for emission control equipment (E.G.R. valve, oxygen sensor, pipes and so on) are incorporated to ensure the vehicle maintains compliance with Australian Design Rules for vehicle emissions
- exhaust systems must continue to comply with relevant legislation or Australian Design Rules for vehicle noise.

• The exhaust outlet must extend at least 40mm beyond the furthermost outboard or rearmost joint of the floor pan that is not continuously welded or permanently sealed which could permit direct access of exhaust gases to the passenger compartment, but not beyond the perimeter of the vehicle when viewed in plan.

• The exhaust outlet, if to the side of the vehicle, must discharge to the right hand side of the vehicle and downwards at an angle to the horizontal of not less than 15 degrees and not more than 45 degrees.

• The exhaust outlet, if to the rear of the vehicle, must discharge at not more than 10 degrees above or 45 degrees below the horizontal.

• All exhaust and muffler systems must be free of any leaks or mechanical faults and should be adequately supported.

That doesn't really mention number of mufflers specifically but it is as Sic Lux said a requirement to be legal.

well i have 2 1\4 straight through with a 8in hotdog with extractors and seriously i got a headache after driving it for 15min got the hotdog changed to a sports muffler nice rumble and nice power gain

I ran mine with a sports muffler and it sounded sweet before I put the turbo on then it went down hill. But then put a 2 1/2 stainless straight through system on then sweet again.

seriously no mufflers means no go on non turbo, loose too much backpressure. mine fell off the old 3litre diesel i had in it and just driving it home it would fart and die on hills like a d charade on 3 cylinders. got the new system with ext sport muff and 2.25 pipe and i can put it in 5th and leave and no probs, unless a mass hill. got tubo then do it, it sounds sik and has power. my 2c worth

I didn't think any diesel needed back-pressure?
Or do they just not need as much as petrols ?

wouldnt have a clue but they need backpressure, that why they die out without mufflers (non turbo). look at it this way, your exhaust gases escaping would be like throwing a tic tac down a hallway

My DIY snorkel taking in air already has a loud hum to it when I rev... forces me to crank AC/DC even louder

Guess i'll have to save up for a turbo and do it then

Just as a idea my mate was Quoted 350 from extractors back with new muffler and flex joint fitted in 2 1/4in

I paid $700 for a set of extractors, 2" exhaust and a sports muffler on my hilux, and it droned like a bastard at 2200rpm till i put carpets in and soundproofed the back wall of the cabin, now i can barely notice it.

make SURE they put a flex joint in if your getting extractors- mine didnt and after about 75,000kms the vibrations ripped the #4 pipe clean off the flange at the engine.

Yeah mine done this after a few rubber mounts came off
