rattle sound in gears

Post by macca81 »

last couple of days(funnily enough the same timespan as the handbrake issue in another thread) ive occasionaly heard a loud, and i mean really loud, rattling sound thats sounds like its comming from the front of the gearbox or the bellhousing. only lasts a cpl of seconds then usualy goes away, but when its there i cant put it into any gears, but can leave it in gear and it still drives(altho its not a nice feeling to drive it when its happening.
had to pull over a few times coz i couldnt get it into gear, so had to sit on the side of the road waiting and wondering.
noise is louder when revs are higher also.

just realised that thinking back i dont think its happend to me over 60kph either...

any ideas?

cheers guys

the nut on the back of the mainshaft in the transfer has probably come undone. This happened to the MQ 4spd in my Landy Hybrid. It eats into the back of the case then evenualy locks up the gearbox. In my case in a bog hole almost on my side at night, with winch cable tight and flat batteries.

There is a plate on the back of the case you can undo and check.

The nut has probably driven itself into the plate.
