just because it call pull it, doesn't mean the towbar won't be torn off the chassis rails, or the chassis rails won't twist....

I'm sure all rangie classic's and discoveries had towing capacities of 4000kgs, I'll stand corrected if a rover guru points out im not.
F trucks have 4 ton towing capacities as well.
they got the the vans that air con guys use.... they got a high towing capaictiy too as well as a lot of room inside

custom bar work, 4x4 parts, trailers, anything out of steel/alloy :D
my gq says 3500 rated towing capacity. and the tow bar says 3750 from memory.
id never tow any where near that now tho.
v8 heeps tow over 3000kg and are cheap as now too.

Disco's (series 2 from late '98) have a towing capacity of 3500kg. But if you have the optional L/Rover towing kit on the Disco I think you can have 4000kg capacity (Hayman Reece style only have up to 3500kg). Defenders have a 4000kg capacity.
The combination of good brakes, ACE, SLS, etc make these better than just about all other 4wd's for towing ability.

Re: Tow Vehicle for around 3000kg +
Most 4wds do 3tons but the trailer needs to have it's own brakes.CRUSHU wrote:What can tow 3000kg or more?

Other wise it's 700kg un-braked, for Australian 4wds.
US pick ups are pretty much the same but you can get dual wheels for them which up the amount of for towing.
The towbar is rated for 3500kg, when fitted to a GU, but is only rated to 2500kg on your GQ, you should check it out.badger wrote:my gq says 3500 rated towing capacity. and the tow bar says 3750 from memory.

What F trucks are 4000kg? Not F100 - F150's thats for sure! Must be the current shape F250 - F350, 2004 - 2007?
The 50m ball is rated to 3500kg, so anything over will need to be 70mm.
I need REAL info here peoples, Actual VEHICLE ratings, and what model/year, not towbar ratings/ball ratings.

Not sure if its common knowledge but a manufacturers rated capacity isn't necessarily what you are allowed to tow. Changes state to state. Hope this helps

here then.
http://www.4wdworld.com.au/tipstricks/weights_4wd.htm
Look at the 4wd maker websites, 700kg is the max for a trailer without brakes on it here in Australia I havn't seen anything higher than that, at the car shows etc.
3ton would be about the max for the Japan 4wds, they aren't made for towing stuff really.
can goto a US pickup then get a dual wheel setup that'll push up the amount of weight you can pull, helps with traction plus also holds more weight in the rear.
US pickups seem to be more for towing than anything else, just cost a packet plus an armand a leg.

1990-1997 Toyota Land Cruiser Review
Toyota launched this generation of its 4-wheel-drive wagon way back in 1981. By 1990, power came from a fuel-injected 4.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine, making 155 horsepower and driving a 4-speed automatic transmission. All Land Cruisers had on-demand 4-wheel drive. Front hubs still had to be locked and unlocked by hand. A Land Cruiser could tow 3500 pounds.

I would consider AWD (80 or Disco) to be of significant benefit. Definatley better towing with AWD then with 2wd. I used to use 4wd on bitchumen in the wet as 2wd would just lose it on corners. I regularly tow far too much.

Im pretty sure any light vehicle (ie less than a truck) in Australia is limited to tow 3500kg legally. Don't know the ramification of getting this incresed or if you can even do that.nabstud wrote:Not sure if its common knowledge but a manufacturers rated capacity isn't necessarily what you are allowed to tow. In saying that in the UK landrover defenders, discoverys (dunno bout new ones) and ranger rovers (classic) are all allowed to legally tow up to 4000kg with the Tow package from land rover. Lets em all tow round their horse floats etc

My old man has towed over 6t on a triple axle trailer (not including the trailer) on an XA falcon with 351 and FMX with trans cooler, has a hayman reece bar tied into the front subframe, and those springs to unload the tow ball (forget what there called) and a brake controller in the cab obviously. has done many trips with 4000kg total from QLD to VIC with no ill efects.

Crushu, If you have a vechile and you need the to know the higest rating towbar for that vechile from hayman reece ( usally the highest rating of the towbar manurfactures ) I can do that at work for you as we are hayman reece distrubutors and I'm linked into the HO computers.
Just because your vechile can tow 3.5 tonne that dosent mean your towbar is rated to that.
F trucks, the best way to get big rating is use a R1800, Truck towbar custome built on your vechile and use a 70mm ball. The towbar is then rated to 4t.

What about a small canter truck or something if its only for towing and not d/d. Mind you they still only have small engines and might not get you the 100kph your looking for.
You can get a small tilt tray or beaver tail for the money you want to spend, screw the trailer idea, if you want to do long k's buy a truck and don't piss around with poor fuel consumption and potential overloading of the vehicle in which you plan to tow the monstrosity with.
Have you heard of rolling resistance, the more wheels and weight on the ground the more energy is needed to propel the vehicle, plus you have wear and tear on another 4+ tyres and breaks and wheel bearings etc.
With a vehicle of the f100's weight a truck is your only option, also looking at you pics of the yellow thing you also have width to consider, you won't even fit that on a conventional car tandem without changing wheels all the time, that sux.
I have this same problem of width with my vehicle the trailer i use is alsmost 2.5m wide just on the legal limit for australian roads and you have to drive over the gaurds, but my advantage here is my truck only weighs 1800 kg max
