Time to Turbo my 80 - any Thoughts?
Hi All,
It's time I start thinking about putting a turbo on my 1HZ diesel 80 series.
I bought it with 386,000km on it. Now it's got 410,000km, has never had to be topped up with oil between changes, has good oil pressure and recently when I had the valve clearances done the mechanic asked if the k's were original, because in his opinion the engine sounds like it has only done 150,000km.
Anyway, my mate has a turbo he thinks is from a Nissan 300ZX (45v2 on the housing if that means anything to someone) that I can have. I plan to fit new ACL big end bearings when I pull the sump for the oil return, but I have a few questions.
1. Where do I take the oil feed for the turbo from?
2. Funds are a little tight at the moment meaning I won't have enough to get a new exhaust made. Is it enough to temporarily remove the mufflers in the originals system and replace them with straight pipe in an effort to get the standard system flowing a bit better until I can afford a full custom system?
3. Should I plumb the oil return to the sump above or below the oil level?
If anyone has any comments or further suggestions, I am all ears. I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to turbos so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm not after a ball-tearer of a car, just a bit more go up bush and enough to tow our 17 foot caravan a little easier.
Thanks,
Tom.

Not to flame you dude...
Go to the search function http://carl.outerlimits4x4.com/search.php, type in CT26, and then to the left select from the drop down menu Toyota and hit search. There are 2 pages that come up, and about 3 threads on the first page of results with what you are after.
Spend the time having a good read and then reply in some of those threads for more answers.
I mean no disrespect, but there is tonnes of info already there, and grumpy hungover people are going to tell you to do it anyway.
EDIT: a good read would also be the ih8mud link in this thread http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/phpBB2/vi ... p?t=121492

It's funny how people get the S*its when you ask something that they feel you should use the search function for.
It's a shame I think, because it stops new users from having some input presenting new ideas. I thought a forum was a place for discussion. If they don't like a subject, or feel they have talked about it enough, don't reply and move on to reading the next subject. Leave it for someone who feels they do have something that they can contribute.
Anyway, I had done some searches earlier, there is a lot of generic info available, but I was hoping someone may have had some input specifically with regards to the turbo I'm hoping to put on my car. I also couldn't find anyone who had simply removed mufflers from their standard exhaust, and hoped someone would advise if it would be worth while or not.
Anyway, I suppose I'll just have to give it a go and see what happens.
Thanks,
Tom.

i cant see why you cant just cut the muffler out (and resonator, if you want full noise). My 60 has a 3" exhaust with no muffler or resonator just a pipe, cant see why you couldnt hack into the stock exhaust and weld some pipe in.
As far as the 300zx turbo, ive heard people use them to replace the factory CT26 cause they can be boosted more and they are a ball bearing turbo (i think)
Wise move to replace big ends, only thing i would be a bit scepticle about is the amount of k's its done if your mechanic thinks it shouldnt be a problem go for it!!! Just make sure you get it tuned properly!!
sorry cant help you with the oil feed.
if anything ive said isnt true please correct me

You will find the factory exhaust very restrictive as it is a small diameter and takes the long road to china to get to the back. What are you like at back yard fabrication? You could have a go at making your own exhaust using premade bends, flanges and some pipe. Maybe get the tricky bit (dump pipe to first flange) done by an exhaust shop and then have a go yourself, you will save a wad of cash and probably have fun in the process.Landcruiser Tom wrote:Thanks for your reply Dan.

That amount of k's if your worried, get a compression test done, that will give you a good indication on the amount of wear in the pistons/rings/bore, however from what you say the engine sounds in pretty good nick (remember, im no diesel mechanic so dont trust what i have to say from reading on the interweb >_<).
Now i havent looked closely at a 1HZ but you can probably find an oil source near the oil filter housing or somewhere else on the block, oil return into the sump is a good aswell, braze a fitting on when you change your big ends/mains.
You can make a turbo manifold out of your current exhaust manifold (assuming you dont have have extractors) chop the current flange off, either get a workshop to machine and weld a turbo flange on for you, or once again if your comfortable with back yard fab weld the flange on yourself and then get the face machined up so it is true.
Cant comment on the 300zx turbo past that i know dumbdunce; a fairly well respected and knowledgeable member of this board has used them on at least 1 turbo 1HZ motor with good results. Another thing i would definitely recommend is a exhaust gas temperature gauge, these are expensive ($250 ish check out www.egauges.com) but are safe insurance when you start playing with fuel mixtures and also in the future you can get better economy by driving to your EGT.
While your doing your exhaust, you can grab yourself some pipe to make up with ducting under the bonnet along with some silicone rubber bends, shop around for these at places like supercheap, purple pig in bayswater (corner of mountain highway and stud road), ebay and other auto shops.
To get the best performance and economy i suggest you get an intercooler and boost compensator fitted, but these arent 100% neccesary. Remember to use a good quality Japanese spec oil as well, and keep the colling system in good nick.
If all of the above sounds a little too much for you, shoot Dzltec a PM, ask for his contact details and either ring him or go in and see him and he should be able to send you down the path of boosted-ness
Note: i know people tend to get their back up when told to search, and ive been there myself. Searching and then asking is fine, but its best to either reply in a thread thats already been started, or lay all your ideas out in a new thread with sources to threads so people can make comment on where you have drawn your ideas and sources from. We will then have 10 threads chock full of awesome tech, rather than 50 with little snippets of information and people being told to search. Im not having a go, just trying to show you a good approach.
Cheers,
Dan.

Dude. done the budget boost already.
Take your oil pressure sender out - hook up T piece and plumb the oil feed line in the shortest distance poosible over to the turbo.
Aim to keep the turbo High(I did and like it!) so oil can be tapped into your sump just below the block. likewise - make the distance for this as short as possible.
Standard exhaust will really push EGT's up as it restricts the flow. Cut n shut of muffler is a good start but try and get that sorted post haste.
Pyro is top idea, Intercooler even better. IMO the following is a smart way to do things:
Save up cash, get a good tune done on the engine as soon as the turbo goes on. DON'T get cocky and go past 8psi boost. Save, save, and save till you can get an intercooler and the exhaust done and look at a boost compensator. No matter who you beleive - get the sump dropped and all shells inspected/replaced pre turbo bolt up(@$500) as 400,000 is allot work on a 1hz and it's a cheap piece of insurance, because once you have done the I/C and ehxaust - you will be chasing for more psi...
Good luck with it!

Dan, I know you're not having a go, and I appreciate your replies and help. Thanks mate.
A mate of mine is a sheet metal worker and he has offered to give me a hand, so welding and fab work should be taken care of. I'm thinking cut the flange from the original exhaust, weld as close as possible to the turbo flange leaving just enough room to bolt it up, and that should be good. The rest of the exhaust I might have to sit down and have a bit of a think about and what to do.
I know most people say to take the oil feed from the oil sender outlet in the block, but I thought I remembered reading somewhere where someone said it was possible to take a feed from around the oil filter area somewhere.
I've factored in that I'll need to get a pyrometer to ensure my exhaust temps are low, and also need to get it dyno tuned to get the pump adjusted to suit the turbo. I'm after a bit more power, but am also after better economy if possible. Might be worth me getting a boost gauge too.
Intercooler is not something I have thought too much about, but having said that, another mate of mine mentioned last night that he thinks he has an intercooler from a Mazda RX8 lying around somewhere - is it worth the trouble to throw it in when I'm thinking I'll probably only run about 8lb boost?

You've done some awesome work UDM... Do you find much lag with the intercooler, you have a fair bit of piping, considered modifying the intake manifold so the intercooler pipe doesnt have to feed into the cross over pipe?
LC Tom there is excellent pics on UDM's website on how ever thing fits together.

not really. I have raced/played against my brothers 1hdt 80series, and mine still goes better but im sure his would be better for towing.+dj_hansen+ wrote:Do you find much lag with the intercooler, you have a fair bit of piping
yeah, i have thought of that, but just couldnt be bothered... maybe if i get my hands on an intake manifold, i can send that one and get it done.+dj_hansen+ wrote:considered modifying the intake manifold so the intercooler pipe doesnt have to feed into the cross over pipe?

Thanks for that. Might do the job OK then because I don't plan running more than 8 psi. I tried doing some google searches on 45v2 but didn't come up with many hits.45v2 is a 300zx turbo....surfection on this forum has an intercooled 300zx setup and it works well. 14 psi is the upper limit thou, as they have ceramic rear turbine wheels....
UDM, the pics on your site are pretty helpful. Your oil return to the sump seems to be above the oil level - is this better than having it pump back in below the oil level?
Thanks for all the input guys - very much appreciated.
you need to have the oil return as close to the top of the sump as possible, you dont have you pull the sump off you can punch a hole and tap a thread into it.
as the others said oil pick up is the sender just next to the filter ad a T peice and away you go.
if the turbo is water cooled take the water from the heater hoses.
on the back of the injector pump there is the fuel mixture screw, watch is bloody closly when you undo the locking nut as it moves the screw, screw it in or clockwise 1/4 of a turn and it will be pritty close to what you will need. but a pro will do a better job and get it spot on.
BIG HINT if you do take the sump off there glued on there really good. get a paint scraper and tap it in then tap it all the way around and it will fall off.
Also when you go to put the sump back on you will need to remove the 2 locating screws at the back as the sump wont go back on with them there.
i fitted a DTS kit myself a few months back and there all the traps i found.
cheers
