gearbox swap info...

Post by avalanches »

Hello chaps!!!!
new to this forum.

I've got a landcruiser Bundera (lj71) with a R151 gearbox behind a 2l-t engine, the gearbox has got unbelievable noisy and thinking about it, I want to up the gears a bit more so I go a bit faster and my fuel economy improves as well....

so I need some info about what high gear Toyota gearbox or (hopefully) 6 gear one would bolt to my engine or if not, what diffs I'm I able to fit.

My toyota is on 4 coil springs and has ( I think ) 4.88 diff ratios.

sorry about asking so much the first time but please help, I dont want to go driving for hours to find the wrong parts.

cheers

On the Toyota manifactures plate 5th line down it will have
R151 G###
If you let me know the G code numbers We will know what the diff ratio is
What size tyres do you have fitted
In my 4runner I have fitted the R151 and modified the over drive from 17% to 30%. I have a V6 conversion that will handle the extra overdrive

I do not know what you have in the UK in the landcruiser range

HZJ80 10x41 4.1 ratio
HZJ75 9x37 4.111
100 10x43 4.3

The front diff out of these are hi pinion to fit the front of the Bundy
Some Bundera,s in Aus also have 4.556 ratio
I am in the prosess, with drawings of fitting the T56 6 speed onto the Hilux gear drive transfer case, I have already done the bell housing to fit T56 onto the Commodore V6
5th and 6th gear are both over drive

is there any toyota 4.1 or 4.3 diffs?
if so, which one could I fit, would it require a lot of mods?

refer to my second reply
I know of 15 different ratios for the Hilux and Bundera around the world
With ratios from 3.07 through to 6.8 all are a direct bolt in

I thought your option it's increasing the tire size or downward the axle ratio ..

You have factory Toy at least 4.11 and 4.56 ..

My LJ70 started life with a 2L engine. I can confirm the diffs are 4.88 ratio.

If you are looking for 4.1 diffs you need to find a landcruiser fitted with the 1KZ engine. LJ78 was my halfcut model, with 1KZ, R151F and 4.1 diffs.

I have the 4.1 diff ratio parts spare....pity you are so far away. Although I put on the new axles I kept the ratio at original 4.88.

A 2l and a 2l-t are a bit different .. I would assume your 2l would have a g52 or a W series box.

Yes. Original configuration was 2L, g52 and 4.88s. I then changed out the G52 to 5sp R151F and later a 2LT. Lately installed 1KZ and R151F, although to date I kept the 4.88 diffs.

As I said before I do not know the ratios of your Toyota range in the U.K.
In Aus a 4.1 hi pinion to suit the front of your Bundera would come out of the front of a 80 series Landcruiser
4.1 for the rear would come out of a 2wd ute or a Hiace van
You will need to check with some wrecking yards or your Toyota dealer for a diff comparison chart etc
