Aircon Smell??

Post by Fmx_Aus »

G'day all,

In my VX Commodore everytime I turn the aircon on for the first few minutes a strong damp smell comes through the vents.

Anyone know what it is and how it can be fixed?

Thanks a heap.

Cheers

Is it really minutes? A few seconds seems to be pretty common.

But if it's really going on for minutes then you may have some water pooling in the system. Is the a/c drip hose/pipe blocked maybe? Or is it possible that the "fresh air" intake on the car is letting water in, eg because it is partially clogged with leaves etc?
This is not legal advice.

Its probably the heater core leaking. Does the winscreen fog up as well. They're a pretty common problem and a full days work to replace.

Nah windscreen doesnt fog at all. It does it on fresh ir and recycle. Can see any leaves in there. And yeh it prolly isnt minutes, around 30-60 seconds I guess.

Hi. My missus used to work for ford when the ba came out and some of them got a musty smell problem too. Apparently it was some kind of bacteria problem and they would spray a can of aerosol stuff through the system to fix it.

My Patrol has the same..cat piss smell when the A/C is left on recirculation mode Turn the vent to fresh air,.. no smell.

Must be a build up of moist cabin air that goes mouldy.

or I have a cat pissing in my car

Yep sounds like water pooling somewhere. When I have the air-con on and about to pull up I turn the air-con off but leave the fan running for the last K or two. Helps to dry any moisture out in the system.

Most air con in cars have a drain pipe that drips water under the car when it's on. This may be blocked.

Sounds like u could have a hole in the evaporator, does a pool of water accumulate under the car on the passanger's front floor area.. if not it, the drain could be blocked..... wurth make a A/C disenfectant(spelling... me crap at it) which u spray in the recirc opening( spray abou 1/4 to 1/2 of the can in it) with the fan on low speed then shut it off and let sit for 30min or so, this could also help......

if no sucess take to a A/C shop and get them to check it out
