high water over engine, and misfiring...

heyas,

i have a 94 jtop pajero v6.

i noticed recently regardles of the fact i have a snorkel, if i go thru water that goes over/near the top of the engine, it misfires very badly (which obviously isnt good if your in water than deep, since all you want to do is power thru and get OUT).

i am guessing it is caused by the water hitting the distributer or water getting between the spark leads and plugs, resulting in a misfire..

is there any quick solution to this? since i most likely often will find myself in water up to around the bonnet height, and i need the car to still run reliably so it doesnt get stuck in the water..

no point stopping water getting into the intake if the waters going to kill the engine via stopping spark!

what does everyone else do?

Stand back and wait for everyone to tell you to get a diesel.

Short of that all you can do is seal the distributor up. Some people use silicone, others prefer not to use something so permanent and grease the dist cap up with vaseline before a trip.

I would say it's the distributor, anyway, not the leads/plugs.

I've also heard of spray-on silicone grease over ALL the ignition components, but I have NFI how effective it would be.

Another one is ruber gloves over the dizzy with leads runing up the fingers (need 2 gloves if you have bigger than a 4cyl :D ) taped up, sealed and vaselined/sprayed.

If you seal your Dizzy up ie silicone make sure u put a small breather hose in.

Quailty plug leads with nice soft rubber boots (not the heat baked rock hard bits of junk that have been on there the last 80,000k's) a bit of di-electric grease around all the various area's that water may get into the electrical system. IE plug boots, dizzy cap, coil lead, etc etc.


seal it up good and no more miss firing. Lanolin spray is not to bad at this either.

sweet thanks for the ideas...

i noticed the plug leads,where they join onto the plugs are fairly loose, and it doesnt take much to unseat them and cause misfiring..

ive replaced one lead already when it was last serviced, and high quality leads can wind up costing a mint, depending on brands of course.. prob what, $200 for a set of 6?

If your truck is stalled in a river with the water in the cab rising rappidly $200 does not seem so bad.

tru tru.. but where does it end.. :P

$ for leads to stop it stalling, $ for snorkel to stop it sucking in water, $ for mud tyres to stop it sliding, $ for lockers, $ for winch, $ for lift kits etc..

was gonna try some of the cheaper fixes first, but stay wary of deep water..

$130 for a set of 8 to suit a rover delivered to my door.

For the quality and price you wont get any better. will pay for themselve in a month in the fuel saving if yours are as bad as they sound.

one of my mates got his dizzy hooked up to his air locker compressor and when he goes into deep water he switches the compressor on and it puts air pressure inside dizzy this then in turn stops water getting in buy air blowing out this idea works with a couple of connections and a hose
plus this gives you a reason to get lockers :armsup:
