help! weird 80 series noise :(

Post by biscuits »

Just got home from a 1200km overnight trip to Kal and back, when the 80 series starting making some weird noises ... Was just coasting along doing ~50kph and it made what I could best describe as the noise you make when grinding gears - except it sounded like it was coming from the front diff - went for about 2-3 seconds at a time ...

80 series is a 4.5L full time 5 spd model.

Any thoughts what that noise would have been?? front diff about to blow???

Cheers,
Dave.

not common but you could have chipped a tooth or worn some hard facing away prematurely, this could have got caught in the bearings or gone through the crown and pinion.

I recommend dropping the diff oil and seeing what comes out

You could take the center out and inspect it before jumping to conclusions.

Or

You could forget about it :P

You first and second step ... with this you will figure what's up inside ..

If everithing looks ok .. you can search in the bierfield department ..

I would agree its worth checking your wheel bearings.

I had a relatively new bearing collapse and it made a onehelluvaracket!! (grinding crunching noises)

Our cruiser did the same thing on the F3 coming back from the Wattegans it made the noise every couple of minutes and felt like it would either pull or lose drive to the front wheels when it did.

Ended up getting it towed from a servo on pennant hills road as a precaution - had a mechanic look at it the next day, he took it for a drive, did it again, worse than it ever had and stopped, never happened again.

Mechanic tightened the bolts on the diff housing anyway, as they were fairly loose.

Any oil leaks... looseness in front wheels...

Drop the oil, cheapest first check. Then come back with results. Keen to see where this goes.

Cheers
