welding uo muffler hole

Fixing the rusty bit you see is easy, it's just the fact that you'll continue getting rust hole's in it so you may as well save your time now and just replace it!

I wouldnt bother welding it. If your desperate enough to want to fix instead of replace, (and yes, I know what its like to have to resort to such measures, so I wont worry about the flame suit) then I would look at pop riveting a patch on, with a heap of silicon between the patch and the muffler. Easier, and probably quicker, and just as effective.

Yeah take the desperate measure if you need to, but as far as welding goes remember that the hole is just the first spot where the rust has gone all the way through the metal. It's probably ALMOST through to making holes in a whole lot of other spots as well.

Yes it is desperate, i want to get a new system but just cant afford to. Ive had enough of the noise and the loss of power so i just want it fixed till i can get a new system.

I've seen pop rivets and a bit of exhaust sealer stuff do a reasonable job for a short term fix.

a coke can, a cple of pipe clamps, and some gasket goo. works wonders

Get yourself a Muffler Bandage. Any automotive store will have them and it will be less then $10. Other exhaust putties and sealers are available cheaply if the hole is in a spot you can't wrap a bandage around and can be bogged up.

If the metal around the hole is good you can MIG it up pretty easy.
If it was a rust hole it is very hard to weld as the steel is pretty much gone and you will be burning the hole out quicker than you are filling it.

get similar plate thickness as muffler... and cut it large enough around the hole and weld the plate to the muffler...

fill welding is a PITA in my opinion especially thin materials.

Use some good old silicone on it. Any type works a real treat. IF you need it for rego, Wipe it in a way so it looks like you got it on your hand and was wiping it off at the easiest place possible.


Will never melt, catch fire leak again, etc. Used it plenty of times, even on my old jag which due to lpg used to leak water at almost every join on the exhaust.

Very cheap solution and takes a whole 2 mins

Spose all good i guess, didnt really read the full post about inside muffler,etc

If had to , you could silicone a whole patch over the outside of the hole as well, if it was too big.

ive tried some muffler putty tybe stuff. Let it dry for a number of hours etc And it blew thru the second i gave it a decent squirt. I think welding/wiring/siliconing a coke can type of thing over it could work. cheap too

ive just done my exhaust and used that ManiSeal shite which goes very brittle.
After takeing it to a reputable exhaust place to get muffler swapped he said to never use this sort of stuff again.


Your best bet is silicon and in your case id go with some 1.6mm sheet and rivot it on, with lots of silicon preferably higher temperature stuff.

at least twice I've done this on the same zorst... well, my welder mate did it for me

Weld a patch of metal over and around the hole, that way you only need to weld on good, or at least better steel not rusty crap. Looks bodge but does the job.

And save for a new, better system, you wont regret it
