A year or two back Sony (I think it was Sony) produced a number of defective LCD units which gave up the ghost after a while as you describe. These went into a number of cameras including Canon. I had this trouble with mine and Canon replaced it free of charge even though the camera was out of warranty. Other manufacturers did the same but there was not a lot of publicity about it. I suggest you google a bit - you might find a list of models and serial numbers which the defective unit went into. Worth a try as video camera repairs are EXPENSIVE - probably cheaper to buy a new one unless you have a top of the range model.

Yep.. definately follow this up.. the old man had a sony handycam that didnt have anything on the viewfinder or LCD or would record.. after doing some googling there was a batch that had a recall and were offered free replacement of the part that had failed from sony. the camera works good as new now..
If this is not the problem email me, as my nabour used to be a sony repairer, and he will probably be able to fix it. I will ask him if he is interested just in case.
