Automatic Transmission rebuilds
Had to get out of a bit of a hole on the weekend and think it may cost me a bit in repairs.
Car is a 91 T/D with the 4spd auto, I assume it to be the A440F. Normal driving is fine however found today that when under full load the 1-2 gear change is very harsh, and feels like a double engagement, kind of like clutch shudder. All other changes are fine. If hot and sitting in gear at the traffic lights I get a shudder through the car. If I put in Neutral it goes away.
Any quick diagnosis suggestions?
What is a rebuild worth on the Toyota autos?

I have delt with them a couple of times for parts and they have always been good to deal with.

before spending your $$ on a rebuild try a simple fluid change. Amazing the difference it can make.
I have had auto's act up in a similar manner in the past, drop the sump, change the filters and fresh fluid 60,000 Ks later still going strong. (wifes car)

IS there a particuar grade of fluid the A440f is uspposed to use .. and did you cook your a bit when flogging it on the weekend .. amazing how quickly it can break down without a cooler.

Your torque converter is probably needing a fix up...the lock up clutch can sometimes partially rub and that gives the shudder at the lights...dave off this site fixed mine upy...he works at a torque converter shop at Girraween....u might be interested in a auto on ebay at the moment...look under landcruiser
the converter sounds like the cause of the rubbing as you describe it. Not sure if that would explain the 1-2 shift when the other shifts are OK. Makes me thinks that may be more likely to be gears.
Yep, fluid was changed just after I brought the car, about a month before the dramas happened on the weekend. Believe it to be my own stupid fault trying to rock it back and forth between drive and reverse to get it out of the hole.

took a quick look tonight, fluid is still nice and red and clean.
Couldn't find a model number stamped anywhere, but the serial number is 1I 1365 and AISIN is stamped on the side of the box. Gregory's Manual says its a A442F but I am dubious as I don't have an electronic overdrive switch like the Gregory's manual. Build date is 10/91. Would like to at least be able to identify the box before I try some local auto trans specialists.

it is a A442f if you have a 4th overdrive button on the shifter, or a A442 if it has 123dnrp shift. The 442 trannies can get hot if left out of lock up while towing...the oil is red, but does the oil smell burnt?? check the kick down cable is adjusted to spec and not jammed open.....rocking the cruiser should not cause a problem...they are robust...the converter usually shits itself after an overheating...
Lastly, empty the oil out and pull the pan....check the filter is clean and check for metal in the sump....you will see plenty of black gooey stuff, if you see any clutch bits (solid black) or shiney stuff silver or gold...be on the lookout for spares....
