gq diffs under mk + soa
gq diffs under mk + soa
i have been offered a set of gq diffs for a really good price and i am going to do a soa on my mk swb i just want to know if any one has done this any thing that will stop this from working mainly with the steering side of things
cheers in advance

Re: gq diffs under mk + soa
steering is no dramas, the rear pumpkin is offset on the mk and the GQ is centre.taspatrol wrote:i have been offered a set of gq diffs for a really good price and i am going to do a soa on my mk swb i just want to know if any one has done this any thing that will stop this from working mainly with the steering side of things

if you get the angle of the dangle ( rear shaft) right, it should be ok,taspatrol wrote:is there a way around this can i put th gq transfer case on the mq of is it not worth the effort
at worse case you may not beable to cancell out all the high speed vibes from rear tailshaft.
to put a gq transfer is you have to make an adapter from the mq box ( unlikely) or put gq driveline in ( costly)
you may beable to however get a mq/ h260 and a GU h260 and then afix the disks from d mq to the GU.
does the MQ 260 full float?
maybe just do the front diff.

but other than rear pumpkin (which isnt huge) guys is there any more issues he needs to know about?
no the pumpkin issue is not a big one,
other than that, i dont think that perch placement is an issue, nor is steering.
all you would have to put in is a gq master/booster or a brake bias valve.

best bet is to run a mk h260 rear with a gq front. then you have the strength of a gq in the rear but with the right offset.
if the gq diffs you are getting are leafsprung the steering will be exactly the same as your mq(if not get gq leaf sprung swivel hubs) and the rear diff gears will match the h260 too
then you have the strength of a gq in the rear but with the right offset

im interested in this and cosidering same or similar would the h260 be the same width as the gq front or is that not much of an issue not keen on spacers heard some not good storys and like 2 keep as legal as posable
82 MQ SD33T, 5 speed, 4.6 diffs, 50mm spring, 40mm body, front extened 50mm, 35' trapdors (awsum) just lovin getin out there
1 problem to consider....
The GQ coil diff is 4" wider on the long side(passenger side) therefor your drivers side spring perch will be almost on top of the diff pumpkin, in order to keep the diff central.
If you are using a GQ front leaf diff out of a ute then you wil be fine, they a same width as MQ.

GQ leafy ute - TD42, 2" lift, parabolics up-front, dove tail tray and 37" IROKs
So how did this turn out?
I've got both coil and leaf housing sitting in front of my MQ.
Leaf will go in with SPOA mods.
However the GQ has the centre 2" to the drivers side, putting the pumpkin under the spring.
Is there any way to use a GQ housing with out having to Cut into the pumpkin of raising the the spring perchs approx 2" to allow for the pumpkin?
I don't want custom parts if I can avoid it. (parts availableity manily) (IE: I don't want to cut and shut the housing and move the centre inward's because that means custom axles)

get onto hypo, MQs are pretty much the same spacing as hilux which is pretty much the same as 60 series which is pretty much the same as MQ. he moved his hangers out and it worked awsome, but he was telling me he would have notched the housing next time round.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
FYI....my 83 MQ is currently getting 3-linked in the front and 4-linked in the rear. Not using SoA or coils though, simply having it run Fox shocks all around. Also you can buff up the front C200 diff by using H233 CVs, the mod is simple. the bigger CVs fit right in, just use the guts from GQ H233 f/w hubs in your C200 f/w hubs. Then again as most of us know buff up one part of your diff and the next weak link will break. Custom cut axle shafts are available though similar to longfields. Ring Yuri4x4, he quoted me and iirc they were fairly reasonable. At that point your center will be the weak link imho.taspatrol wrote:i have had a good chat to the 4wd shop i get all my bits from and they have put me on to an engineer that can help me out it looks like i might be able to go coils and i was thinking coil overs in the back just ne3ed to ring this engineer monday morning ahh this is going to be a costly excersize
IMHO your best mods for MQ/MK would be to fit the GQ 5spd and x-fer to your stock motor. A simple adaptor plate can do this, seen it done to a P40 and SD33 is the same. Work out the clutch and gear box is a done deal. Fit GQ diffs front and rear, ie H233. But stretch the wheelbase to around 100". You can push the front diff forward 2.5" with no dramas. Rear can go back max of about 3" unless you pull the fuel tank. pull the fuel tank and you can push the rear diff back as far as you like....we doing 5-6" in mine. Link the suspension all around with coils or air shock or coilovers or whatever you like. Linking it though makes doing all these mods much easier than running leaves. This can all be done fairly cheap if you can get bits from your local wrecker. Most expensive part would be the shocks, at least for me the Fox are not cheap. The reason I feel this is the best bet is because you end up a lot wider, add in whatever offset rim you choose to the wider GQ diffs. You also have the option of crawler gears in the future. Overall your drivetrain ends up being stronger than MQ/Mk stuff. You can do whatever wheelbase you like in SWB or LWB. You can go as high as you like lift wise....there is just simply a lot of good reasons to do this.
Ya I know what some of you will say....just fark it and buy a GQ. But ya know what with a bit of skill and a bit of knowledge you can do all this for a lot cheaper than buying a $5k GQ that then needs to be built!
as far as legal...beats the shit out of me....I live in the USA and we can do whatever we like!

my last comment is if you doing these kinds of mods the truck no longer is going to be a daily driver.
