How hot is too hot for an auto ?

Post by MightyMouse »

Been some discussions elsewhere on fitting temp gauges to autos.
Looking to do the same but how hot is too hot ?

As the standard oil temp gauge is for the engine oil, am wondering just what temperature does an auto normally run and more importantly, whats the high limit ?

I'm not certain that the auto brand matters, thought it would be more the ATF thats the issue but just in case its an AW4 which uses Dextron III
( usual disclaimers )

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

Normal running temperature is around the 75-85 deg mark.
With twin coolers mine sits around the 55-60 deg mark.

I have had the temp up to 120 deg once or twice. As long as it isn't for a prolonged time it should be ok.
If the temps have gotten up into the higher range, check your oil. If it's smelling a bit burnt, get the oil changed.
