Steering Wheel Relacement

I have an 85` hilux, and the steering wheel has seen better days.
Just wondering if any other makes of cars steering wheels will fit the Hilux ?

Ebay have steering wheel and boss kits for about $30. Dont know about quality but its round and you can steer with it.....

Just make sure the nut holding the steering wheel will handle the new mod as this is the most important bit on the truck regardless .

you mean the nut on the steering column, or the one behind the wheel??

Just make sure that the replacment wheel has a padded centre piece as it will not comply with the ADR.

I think you will find that brightly chromed wheel centres don't comply in your vehicle due to the year of manufacture.. Satin finish maybe OK, but may be in small doses.

what is one supposed to do with the horn if a steering wheel replacement that has a hole in the middle gets fitted? Is it illegal to put the horn on a button off to the side?
or like the original question said do you just replace with one that has the same functionality of the original? As I am also interested in knowing what replacements fit.

Most of the time a Horn set up will come with the boss kit. It can be done and i've knowen a few that have passed roadworthy and been looked at by cop's (not DOT) good site for Qld

One thing you may want to consider is that most after market steering wheels (Sports) are smaller than the OE one, and may make it hard to see all the dials on the dash. In my Paj i can't see the speedo/RPM dials properly without slightly lowering the steering column.

I took off the original Mav wheel and put on a smaller sports wheel. Worked OK, but like M1S3RY I found it difficult to see all the guages. I then put the original wheel back on and it is far more comfortable.

You can purchase larger than normal sports wheel but remember, if there is no centre padding it is not legal. Also bright chrome work might look good on an 65 XP Falcon but in modern cars this went out with the dodo.

I'm told that most Toyota steering column splines are the same which means you can fit other model Toyota steering wheels up to your column if you wanted to go second hand. I've fitted 60, 75 and 80 series steering wheels to my 40 series over the years with no problems. You can find plenty of nice looking steering wheels at the wreckers that should mount straight on without the hassle of using a boss kit. Just trial fit before you buy as sometimes the offset of the wheel can interfere with things like the high beam switch where you have to pull the stalk back towards the wheel.

??? Don't think this can be right, my FACTORY 110 ('87) wheel has hard plastic in the middle.

I'm sure he means that its not just a bare steel nut or centre that could cause injury, not that i would want to faceplant a landy 4 spoke wheel with plastic centre cover !

I tried to swap steering wheels from 80 series cruiser to hilux (Surf). Spline OK and does up tight but the horn ring was a different diameter and a different hole size / spacing for the indicator off. So almost but no cigar.
