pulled the diffs out to fit the lockers and 4.88 gears, was pleasantly suprised to find new crown wheel and pinnion and bearings in there, 4.11 gears.
now i havnt done a diff before, have all the parts and manuals etc, some people say yeh you can do it yourself, others say get a diff place to do it.
have a diff guy will do each centre for $400 each, i just give him all the bits. is that good price?
reading the manuals and instructions for the lockers im sure i can do most of it, just not sure on things like pre-load and backlash.
do it yur self long as you u gt a dial gauge and marking blue. happy to drop in nd lend a hand or sum knowlidge if your a bit unshure. i done 3 in my lux before i put the gq diff in. pm me if u gt any q's
build as much as possible outside the diff, if you got the extra bolts put the crownwheel on the locker and the bearings on the licker aswell. do as much as you can and then maybe take it to a fitter for the backlash etc.
have a go. it's not hard if you are patient and have the tools and skills. you will need a dial gauge and a marking compound (I use a very light coat of matt white spray paint but red or white lead works well, bearing blue is a last resort). if you are installing new gears it will be a good idea to have an assortment of pinion shims, and you will need a bearing splitter and a press. MOST toyota factory gears set up well enough with a 2mm pinion spacer (9/10 times), aftermarket gears should come marked with a starting spacer. spring scale of low range torque wrench for preload setting. will will need to make or purchase a tool to be able to turn the side bearing adjusters, and another one to hold the flange when you torque up the pinion nut. you will need a new seal and collapsible spacer. it's more or less essential to mount the housing in a strong, bench mounted vice so you can work on all the settings without having the thing rolling around on the bench. There are probably plenty of web guides to building a diff that you could follow. I'd say start with the front especially if it's a part time 4WD vehicle, see how you go and if you are confident you got it right on the front, then tackle the back.
you'll know whether diff building is for you by the time you're halfway through the first one.
the real test of patience is when a customer gives you a set of second hand gears and after about 10 shots at trying to set it up you find out they're not a matched set

he has new gears and air lockers ready to assemble, it is a much bigger job than just installing an air locker. $400 is about the going labour rate to install a new set of gears and install an air locker, some shops would charge upwards of $600 for the same job.
The black magic, when it comes to setting up diffs, is the pinion height, if you dont get this dot on, your farked, if anyone tells you diff's are easy because they've set up an air locker, they're a farking idiot
You need a jig that fits between the carrier bearings, some knowm measurement blocks and some feeler gauges to get this right, if you can't understand, get someone who knows
Oh and a collection of shims to assertain the correct height

good luck trying to set up those MOTIVE gears i wont fit them any more every set we have done of late were a nightmare ,pinions had runout ,crownwheels tight had to run 12 thou backlash and they still had tight spots and this was the last 4 sets we fitted their just cheap crap and $400 isnt bad if hes suppling bearings their about $120 alone

Pay the money and get it done by someone that knows what they are doing. I've seen first hand plenty of diff repairs that needed to be done after the owner thought they could do the job themselves.
Plus running 39's and 4.88's you want to make sure they are set up perfect not just OK.

How is $400 bucks steep?? 4 hours labour can easily be consumed getting a centre, spot on

$400 is quite a good price as i have rung around and got quotes up 2 $600. it includes new bearings and seal. its just getting to the pointy end of the build and the funds are very very low, so need to save as much as possible
