cleaning up rims (paint and prep)

Post by nicbeer »

Hey

I have some 2nd hand sunraisia style rims that have been painted a few times i would reckon.

Whats the best way of cleaning them up ready for some paint. will be going orange again like the current ones. i was thinking of flap disk or wire wheelin them? Is hotdip a good thing to do?

Also is a particular primer colour better for an orange than others?

super, didnt think of that. would paint stripper get rid of the paint on the top of the powder coat?

also are the diy home sand blaster kits enough for this or should get it done properly.

paint stripper will strip the paint off above the powder coat yes.

those home sandblaster kits are a pain in the arse.

waste of time. by the time u buy it and the sand which u will need heaps of and clean concrete floor and plastic over it all and some breathing help to be in there u have just paid someone else to do it and no effort from you.

IME you won't get the rims really clean without a wire wheel. I used to have access to a caustic bath, which was great, but the last set I did I used the following method:

Get some paint stripper, a grinder with a wire wheel, a good set of gloves GOGGLES (AND long-sleeved shirt/trousers - paint stripper stings!)

Put a light coat of paint stripper on the rim (1 "face" at a time), wait 2-3 minutes then hit it with the wire wheel.

This method is MUCH quicker and uses less paint stripper than the normal scrape/wash reapply method.

Sandblaster. I had a set of rims done for a carton. And another carton to get them painted with an industrial coating. And dont be in a hurry. I had mine done when another job was being done.

I spent ages on one of my second hand ones, basically realised that it was going to take too long and got them sandblasted instead.

Well worth it imho, I think it ended up setting me back about eighty bucks for four of them. At that rate, you'd struggle to justify the hours it would take to do them yourself.

If you do get them sandblasted and plan to paint them, make sure you undercoat them as soon as you get them home.

Can you powder coat them in the same colour as if you had painted them.

I want to paint mine the same colour as the lower door on my Mav ( silver top, dark lower door)

Is powder coat obtainable in the same nissan/Ford paint code as per the lower door.

Is painting more durable than powder coating?

The guy we use sandblasts them and powder coats them for $30.00 each.
Not worth paying any more than that as new rims are pretty cheap these days (well 15x8" is)
