First thing you should look at is checking out any oil licks from the gearbox (coming from the clutch bell house) and any crack near the base engine on the body of the engine (the one which is on the passenger side) if the car has done more than 200.000 kilometers. All rest are fixable :D

Idler arm and steering joints loose
Broken engine mounts
split CV boots, evidence of grease leaking out.
Cracks in front of A pillars if larger wheels fitted 30"+ especially
Fluctuating idle - up 200 / down 200 etc - tps failure
crap in headlights
bent tow bar mount on chassis if cheap and nasty tow bar fitted.
handbrake works on hills ( not just stationary )
heater fan works on low speed.
Split transmission boots in cabin
cracked exhaust manifold if standard.
rear door closes properly if large spare fitted
bashed in front bash plate - may have been used hard.
noisy gearbox /transfer
if its a city only car - sometimes the front diff will develop internal corrosion because its never been rotated. bearings can also develop chatter marks due to lack of motion

And take the oil filler off and look iside with a torch - if theirs heavy carbon buildup or deposits then it hasn't been maintained all that well. Rockers on a good one will be a gold/mid brown color. Black - bad.

Check the power steering pulley to make sure it's not loose. Althought DX won't have power steering I don't think?

Check for fuel smells inside the cabin- it indicates problems with the fuel lines in the back of the cabin.

Check the front wheels for any play.

Test out the A/C if fitted for a decent period of time. Mine was failing after 5-10 minutes use and I missed it until after paying. :(

Look for the service history.

Gday guys my first post on here.
I'm buying my brother-in-laws 93 SPII roza wide track.
Some good tips listed on things to look for there, especially given that this will be my first 4b ever. So I'm as green as they coem when it comes to 4b's so this info has helped heaps.
One thing I'm safe for is that the motor is brand spanking new. Only replaced about 4 months ago.
Over all the car is in near perfect condition. Has done only mild off road work which those outings were/are few and far between.....until I get it.
I'll be only the third owner of it and I'll be taking it out a bit more as I do bowhunting and a couple of the places I have access to are hilly and sand dunes.

Anyway enough of the rant till I get it in my driveway then the fun begins :cool:
