I am considering doing an Auto swap on my disco. I believe I currently have the R380 gearbox ( it is a 1996 Disco).
- What are the gear ratios of the ZF ?
- Will my crawl ratio be better ?
- Will the ZF be able to handle more abuse than my R380 manual ?
- Will there is a be a lot of power loss...truck is mainly for off-roadinfg but i drive it to the trails and roads in Lebanon are hilly....
- Do most of you run manual or automatics....
I believe the truck will be easier to drive in the rocks that i d love doing.
I need more crawl ratio but my R&P is a 4.88 Toy R&P now. Rovers option are limtied my option is to go with the MD crawler gearset ( which is deam expensive compared to what you see available for Toy's or Jeeps) or the Ashcroft underdrive. I am afraid the 5.29 Toy R&P will be to weak to handle the 36" and the heavy disco adding to that that it will be roaring on the highway.
Searshing to see if anyone has adapted a Toyota doubler to the ZF...
Jay

Gday Jay,
I'd try the auto before getting crawler gears. The slip in the torque converter does a hell of a lot to negate the need for crawlers. The fellas that I drive a lot with have fitted cralwers to their manuals for offroading, though not so with the autos.
