I have hear the 4 speed t/cases are noisyer. Mine is noisy (sounds like bearings) when coasting I read a whole lot on pirate and they seem to think it is normal with duals ???
yeah i have heard that the top shift cases r noisier a mate of mine has one that he said i can use 2 rebuild it and swap it over with mine so ill look into it
Remember that some of the 4 speed cases are over 20 years old. Helical cut gears require thrust washers to maintain correct mesh, with a bit of age and wear there will be more backlash on decel, as the gears move in the opposite direction of the main thrust washers, causing the gear whine you describe.

I believe you can do this as Marlin sells shift rails to do the conversion.

Never done it but I am sure that the marlin kit is just that - 4sp shift rails!! So it should be able to be done.
