driving home tonight, i started getting a rattle sound from the engine bay, like something was loose. 10 mins l8a i was home, so i popped the bonnet, and had a listen.
it sounded like the sound was comming from the very front of the engine, like around the water pump area.
now to narrow it down, is there anything else in the front end that might make a rattle sound? if not, how easy is it to switch the water pumps over on an SD33? i have another full engine so getting the parts is no probs, just time....

Not familiar with SD33 but most times that water pump is stuffed they leak. Do Sd33's have a timing chain? If so this can be a cause of rattle. The chain stretches over time and starts rubbing on any guides that are in the timing case. To isolate were the noise is coming from run the engine and using a screw driver put the tip on the area that you think the noise is coming from and the handle end to your ear. Acts like a stethoscope. You should be able to figure out where the rattle is. It might be safest to remove the fan.
well took the fan off and turned her over, and what do i see with the fan outa the way? sparks comming from the alternator! so my bearing had shat themselves and thats where the noise came from.
spent 2 hours in the rain putting in my spare alt, and now, sound gone! frick did i get wet tho... bloody tassie weather!
cheers for the help guys, i wouldnt have bothered turning her over if trex hadnt sugested the timing, i would have just kept pulling the pump off right after the fan came off. cheers!
