i want bigger discs...there is some room for about 1inch bigger??
anyone done this?
if so info please...
reason cos have ebc grooved, vented,goodridge hoses,green stuff pads...and i can all to easly cook them while "driving" the tiny welsh mountain "roads"
need more brakes!!

No, the standard rotors with larger defender calipers will only fit under the 16" wheels. You'd need to go to 18" or bigger if you wanted to fit physically bigger rotors in there.zen wrote:i want bigger discs...there is some room for about 1inch bigger??

If you're cooking brakes then your driving style is probably to blame, not the rotor size.
After ridind mountainbikes with EBC green pads, I'd never use them in a vehicle, they fade far too easily. Sintered metallic would be my next stop.

car is rangie classic..31 tyres...nissan 6 pot turbo diesel, intercooled tuned etc...+2 inch..has some extra steel on it
its that you driving well within your/my limits...then a sod off 1:3 or 4 or 5 wiggly downhill comes along..not using excessive braking(mostly engine) you get fade..its not the fluid..and the jap box suv sails past having no problems..!!!..i know my vehicle weighs alot..but!!

I have to agree with Zen. Standard Rangie brakes are good only for unladen vehicles used lightly. I have tried new rotors, slotted rotors all differnt types of pads, regularly change the fluid but the brakes still overheat. I regularly run out of brakes on long down hill runs, not even pushing the car. The road drive from Matlock to Woods Point or from Olinda to Ferntree Gully (for those in Melbourne Australia) leaves me with smoking brakes and no pedal every time.
Fit defender front calipers 46mm.

Toorak Tractor, Adrian I think had a set of porsche discs and clipers under his rover. was not cheap to do..

I have heard of Jaguar calipers being fitted.
The only time I have had fade (and burning smell) is going into Kangaroo valley with my camper trailer on, when I didn't change down.
Maybe a different driving style of using the transmission for slowing is called for. I used to do this all the time back in the drum brake days Sonny.

Depends what you mean by decent. My rangie is 2.3 ton and now stops as well as my nissan wagon which is almost exactly half that.zen wrote:i do use engine braking..1st gear usually does the trick..but it WOULD be nice to have decent brakes..it must be possible...??
When I fitted the new brakes and pads I went for a drive to "bed them in". Driving up to 80km/h, braking down to 30 then repeat. They got hot enough that I could smell the paint cooking, got out and they were smoking. Still didn't have any fade issues.
Semi-metallic pads will let you run the brakes at higher temps without fading, but they probably chew through rotors faster.

That's probably because that's what you have.

Do you mind measuring the gap between the top of your calipers and your 16'' (?) rims, OR the height the top of the caliper is above the outer edge of the rotor. No hurry for this- flat out working myself.
I've got 15 x 8 Hurricanes, so the caliper is very much inside the rim and I want to make sure this great upgrade will fit.
