Depends what I am doing. Moving camp ever day. Then swags the winner. Staying in one spot for 3 or more nights. Then tents are nicer to live with.

If I am taking my girlfriend, small tent. Extended stay - large tent. If I am going without my girlfriend or with the club - swag. If doing a night run always swags.

what he said...

I go to a fair few 4x4 competitions.

I find that having a tarp setup like a good sized one enough to have 10 or more people under it... and lay the swag under it is just perfect for those nights if it rains.

If you have family.. tent is the best option for that...

I still like the 9x9 single pole tent.. if it rains you can at least sit in it and drink.. swag your stuffed... even when gettin changed out of your wet gear, cant do in a swag.. having said that, havent had to do this yet with mine but it wil one day.

As Daisy said.
Thats what the big tarp is for.
I do agree though, tents can be a bit easier to deal with other than just having a tarp and swag.
Depends how long the stay is for.

tarps are easier to pack up than packin a bloody tent into a bag.

And tarps can be used for lot of other things...

Hot day... put tarp up... it'll be shitload cooler.

raining day.. put tarp up... you'll stay dry.

Buy a tent.. you'll still end up gettin a tarp for those very reasons.

Buy a swag... only need to unroll it when you're ready to go to sleep.. and you'll be sleepin before the next bloke's put up his tent.

What sold me was on a trip to Wonangatta everyone else (5 cars) had the 9x9's and just up and away... I had the dome back then, I was drowned by the time others were into their 3rd beer. Swag would have been faster, but with the rain I would have been just as wet with settin up a tarp.

And you still get pist on from a great height while setting up a tarp. Agree tarps have more uses than just sleeping under, but nothing to stop you taking one.. I do when I take my swag.

Also before you buy a swag, borrow one to try.. they arent for everyone. I got mine cheap - used once, bloke got clostrophobic and I saved heaps...

As said to each their own...

Does BCF sell these single pole tents ??? and what do they just peg down around a center pole like a circus tent ?

There are a few that make them, namely southern cross canvas and freedom camping for the more expensive ones and oztrail for the cheaper variety. I must admit, they leave assembling a dome tent for dead as all they are is four pegs and a pole.

I'm a firm believer of you get what you pay for, I just shelled out for a southern cross and bought it over some of the new black wolf touring tents which are a good range also. Centre pole is simple and less to go wrong.

Even when staying a long time in one place, I still prefer the swag.
For living space we set up large tarped areas.

i have both, my swag has been used twice. my tent is a 70 dollar special at BCF takes 5 mins to put up and pack away. i love it, fits a queen mattress PERFECT and if i just take my single mattress i have lots of room for foody stuff to be kept away from manimals and invertibrauds.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

me too! I got a Southern Cross Canvas Swag, has seen heaps of action and always been awesome, been in the dust at Cliffhanger, the mud at OBC and the snow at Pirahna Pursuit 3 years ago, wouldn't have it any other way. It's never leaked at all, even though we camped in the shite for three days this year at OBC, was dry and warm!

swag all the way baby, just chuck a tarp up if it's raining, and if you have a good swag you don't get wet anyway

Ive used a tent for years, then got sick of freezing my nuts off and setting the bastard up every night. So i bought a swag, and there is just no comparison, the swag will win in every situation you can think of.
If youre staying in one spot for an extended period you could use a tent... then put youre swag in the tent and sleep in swag.

Also dont go cheap on a swag if you do buy one, the more you spend the better. If you budget at least $300+ then you will have a bloody good swag that should last you forever.

I have the Oztrail 9 plus which is the center pole with an extended back.
I put a tarp over it anyway :D
It extends out the front and that's where I have the table etc setup.

Aldi have a canvas swag on sale tomorrow for $149. Might go check it out.

Swags are great...

I have 2 single swags one cheap bourke and wills and a southern cross dome...
1 double bourke wills...
And a large 6 man tent..

Have you seen the dome swags the southern cross canvas produce?
http://www.southerncrosscanvas.com.au/swags.htm

They are awesome so much room in them alot of guys i know use either single or double and its worth spending that much extra, the roll up easy very well made and if you ever have problem they are always willing to help out...

I never use the other swags the southern cross one is one of the best on the market....

i pretty much prefer my swag for all camping.. cept when i take the missus..

The swag is great in ALL weather, for some reason I have NEVER had condensation inside my swag, the gf's MI3 tent gets it really really bad when we've shared it (plenty of room for 2 ppl + dog)

the swag is great to crash in with the flyscreen done up in the day (just move it into the shade and you can have a nice cool kip), the tent is just too hot. I haven't had any leaks in rain with my swag.. and even shared the swag with the missus on single night stays..

the setup time with the swag kicks the microfast Mi3 (which is known for its fast setup/packup) butt EVERY TIME.. its all self contained too.. pillow, sleeping bag, etc is all in 1 roll with the swag, but with the gf's tent you need to take a sleeping bag and inflatable mattress seperately, etc.

The swag still ends up taking up less room in the 40 too compared to the tent+sleepingbag+mattress
