Reduction Gears
Steve - what would you to recommend maybe on what i need to what i have got.
i have now, 1.6mpfi WT with 3.9s and 1ltr case with noisy input bearing and 31s. idea was to put a bearing kit through the transfer and leave it like that. or do a gearset 4.16 or 4.9s.
but dont want to hurt the beach and track speed. 1lr case with the 1.6 crawled quiet well upwards. downwards could be a bit slower but not too concerned at moment. also 2wd speed but 16% from std is ok with me

4.16 or 4.9's.
once you get into gearing it gets a bit addictive, but with the rest of your setup, even a 4.16 will feel pretty good.

hmm oks. i am now leaning towards the 4.16 instead of redoin the bearings in my 1lr case, from what i have read they are the same reduction in the high range and only differs in the low range to the 1lr. is this correct?
basically trying to justify the extra $200 on the 4.9s over the 4.16 set.
if i do go for 33's next or so i could maybe do diff gears, 4.3 or 4.6's at a guess to lower it all a bit for the tires.
worked out
now (1ltr case,31s,std 5spd,NT 3.9s)
crawl 36.18
4th low 9.9
1st high 22.48
now (4.16ltr case,31s,std 5spd,NT 3.9s)
crawl 59.26
4th low 16.22
1st high 22.48
now (4.9ltr case,31s,std 5spd,NT 3.9s)
crawl 69.8
4th low 19.11
1st high 23.69
whats does this mean in english? Best i can come up with is 4.16 for the 31s and if i go for 33s or 32x9s go for 4.3 or 4.6 diffs with the 4.16. sound good at all. or spend the $$ redo my 1ltr case.

Trail Tough 4.16: 12% 1.58 84% 4.24
Trail Tough 4.9: 16% 1.63 115% 4.88
What it means in english is you get the same road gearing you have now with the 4.16 and almost twice the low range.
right now, and with the 4.16 you will cruise 100 @ 3250 RPM.
with the 4.9's, 100kph will be 3353
Personally, I'd go the 4.9's if you ever plan going over 31- even with 33's, you'll pull 3150@ 100km/h with the 4.9's which your 1.6 should manage, without going into diffs which is a lot more expensive than $200.
59:1 crawl is starting to get into what I consider happy times for a sierra.
Low range speed -
with 31's at 4500 rpm in 5th low, I get 44 km/h with 4.9's, 52km/h with 4.1's and 84km/h now.
I think 40 km/h is fine - it's well into high range 2nd gear. if you need to go faster than 40, you'll easily be able to pull high range with the 1.6.
Hope this helps you make up your mind.
Steve.

sweet. thanks Steve, u put that into good wording.
now to look at $$ to spend.
still thinking of doing the cheap on the 1ltr and replace the input bearing/seal only ($30 or so) run that for now and save some $$ for the better gears. as i need a long range tank next also.

A rocklobster is 84 1L case and works out as
High 1.58 12% Reduction
Low 4.16 80% Reduction
This must be close to identical to the Calmini, TT, etc 4.1 sets??
That rocklobster looks like a good idea. If you got a secondhand '84 case would the gears etc be in good enough condition to do this? Or would it be best to buy new gear set as on the link "want33's" just posted.
This should be alright for a 85 Nt with 1.6EFi & 31's???

chops. depends on what u are driving.
my 1ltr case by itself does well but as it has noisy input bearing i am looking for ideas. i am running same driveline as you
remy - yeh sounds about correct pulled from another site
H 1.581
L 4.16
hate to see the price of new gears.

nicbeer,
How does yours go atm with the 1L & 31's?
Do you drive many hills?
I was thinking I will start at 30's with the 1L case & as I get used to the new rig I will do a rocklobster or gears, just gotta find a 1L case. This will also give me the chance to pull apart the original case while I decide on gears or just do the rocklobster.
I don't imagine the 1L cases are easy to find these days.

want33s, did you get the heavy duty front output shaft also? Is it worth getting?
I understand the gears come with the t-case rebuild bits & pieces/kit.. no?
$475 + $120 shipping (roughly) = $595 x conversion = $665 AUD???
Without the heavy duty front output my order only comes to A$665 including shipping.. this is cheap, what am i missing?

1L cases come up every now and again. i got mine from qld for 150. so it was worth it for me. if it is >200-250 i wouldnt bother i reckon and go for gears but leave that to you.chops_Drover wrote:nicbeer,

Mine is dual locked, 31s, mpfi 1.6 and 3.9s with the 1L case. i can idle right down in L and climbs most of the hills great round here but most are sand or clayish not rock crawling stuff. so may depend on what u play on.
i am looking repairing my 1L for cheep and use it till i got the $$ for the 4.9s.
sounds good what u are planning anyway.
DEEV8, i beleive dont worry about the output shaft but i would so the pilot bearing thou.

nicbeer,
still deciding on what to do.
Probably easier for me to do the gears rather than find a 1L case up here in Cairns FNQ.
I was looking into a set of 30x9.5's m/t just to get started. Probably won't do the gears until early next year. I thought I should get used to the car 1st as it seems alot different to the Isuzu I drive daily.
Currently it has 1.6L Efi engine, 2" BL, approx 2" spring lift. I am going to run those 15x8's in the Speedy d/rats with the offset as I would like to run some 31 or 32's shortly. A rear lokka is going in after gears and if I get carried away I may get the front locked.
I am looking at doing alot of mud so I would like to run the m/t's first & see how they perform & then decide on whether it is worth going to an extreme tyre. (30's are cheaper than 32's).
The car is just a toy & will only be driven on weekends. As soon as I put the diff back together this weekend

Yeah mate the above prices are for 6.5:1 gearset.
Forget the group buy ... doesn't work out any cheaper.
Just go to www.lowrangeoffroad.com and order what you need for your suzi.
Sean is great to deal with and shipping is usually less than 7 days.

im a first time paypal user and i made the farkin stupid mistake of going via bank account instead of credit card... so now its going to take 5 days just to pay the damn money, and i wont have gears for mud bullsmick85 wrote:deev8 GRPABT1 NIK and want33s - post back and let us know how the kit is when it arrives - im ordering mine soon
oh even tho i plan to run 32's - can i still chuck on 30's to run about town - will the gearing be bad??
I couldnt even cancel the fcuking thing and repay either.
im hoping for a miracle but i doubt it will happen... so devastated.
Use the novak converter: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/gearing.htm?11_evl wrote:IF for example im running a 23" tyre and im topping out at 170kph at 5000rpm 5th gear. what top speed should i get stepping it up to a 26" tyre at the same rpm. only change being tyre diameter???
i no a little off topic but im struggling to find the answer
You need some information - gear ratios - but it will crunch the numbers for you.
Here's the answer for you. A 26" tyre is roughly 12% taller than a 23" tyre, so 170+12%= 190.4km/hr
However, I assume you're not running a sierra, as for a stock sierra you'd be running 6200rpm at 170km/h in 5th.

so am i better off just sticking with a set of 32's and 4.9:1 gears and ditch the idea of round town tyres?want33s wrote:6.5:1 gears are 20% lower in high range and are made for 33's.
If you are running 30's it will be ok around town (80km/h or less) but on the highway will rev way too hard. something like 4350-4500rpm at 100 in 5th...
i just mainly want it to zip up and down the road to the shops, be better offroad and do a trip up the sunny coast from bris every now and then towing the jet ski - will it be ok to tow at 100km/h ?
would this be a better option? or go all out and just fit 32's and 6.5:1 ???
car at the moment is standard, with 2 inch body, 2 inch spring, longer shockers and extended shackles. so tire fitting isnt a problem..
