GQ LPG new system 1 day old lots of problems!! with pics
GQ LPG new system 1 day old lots of problems!! with pics
I have just had my patrol 4.2 carbi put on gas everything seemend to be oky at first no problems. But when i was driving along the road today (only picked her up yesterday) i flicked it back to petrol and all it was doing was coughing and splattering. So i took it back to the place and he said it was carbon build up and will need a quick clean. So he will be fixing it on monday. Came home and looked over the complete system now what i need to know from you following patrol owners is....
1. I now have the round air cleaner not the oval one
the air cleaner just sits on top of the carbi and not screwed down. to it so on bumps it can jump up and down. what do people have where the air cleaner screws to the top of the carbi.?? any pictures
2. there is a pipe from the rocket cover to the air cleaner and it keeps poping off where on other people patrol are they located. they look like they have grilled a hole and screwed this pipe into it.
3. they had a chock type cable setup which i am surpost to pull out when i am driving on petrol for a long distance. Do people have this on there trucks..
I really need everyones advice since i am really unhappy with the hole thing there are about 8 things on the truck which are not correct with the install so need to get alot of advice

Sounds like you have an Imcpo 300a mixer., im gathering it is a second hand one. I have the same one on my 4.2
The choke type thing is normal on this system, and should be used when on petrol full stop, not just for long distances. Not using it will cause the engine to cut out and run like crap.
Carbon build up is crap. The thing is either not tuned correctly, or the choke type mechanism isnt working correctly.
An impco 300a has various air cleaners, the round one is one of these.
If your not happy with the install, take it back to the installer, and ask them to fix it. If they dont, or your not happy, take it somewhere else and ask them to fix it, and then send the bill to the first place.
Your knowledge on this system appears to be minimal, so take it to someone who knows, and point out your concerns, then seek their advice.

I really hope you didn't pay too much for the work. It doesn't even look like they slapped it together because there was cold beer in the fridge friday arvo. it's simply half assed work!
keep on their case about everything, I wouldn't be taking your car there again for more work however
As for the sway bar d/c mount that under you dash similar to an old style handbrake, there is no way those little plastic clips in the dash can hold it.

id be talking to the dept of fair trading and or MTA first. Id be looking fir a complete removal and refund first and formost.
Maybe take it to another gas shop for specalist help with dealing with the dept of fair trading. Its obvious that the company who did the work shouldnt be holding a lpg ticket IF they even have one.
I would be attempting at all costs to keep my car ou tof their garage as they will simply bodge it up again.
If all else fails. Park it out the fron of the street with a nice sign on it to protest the work of these guys. Wouldnt take long to get a refund then.
If i was in your shoes id go in there swinging. So sick of dodgey operators, they ruin my faith in all specialists.
Maybe get heaps of pics just for back up.

u could say that again... thats a shocker...chimpboy wrote:That's bloody terrible.
Go back there.. demand your money back minus parts costs and get another fitter to repair it. or a full refund.
I wouldnt trust them to repair it if they can 'install' something like that.
custom bar work, 4x4 parts, trailers, anything out of steel/alloy :D
Seeing the pics, that F%^%ing terrible.
The choke style arrangement will never be held in place where it is. Mine is located to the left of the steering column in the metal part of the dash. Much more stable, as said, those plastic clips will never hold it.
As for the GANN Airbox, its not actually a sealed arrangement unless a tube of silicon is used to seal it !
As all of the others have said, thats so bad it should be criminal.

For any LPG complaints you can contact the AAFRB who responsible for
licensing LPG installers throughout Australia.
Lately I have actually heard of some licences being temporarily suspended after customers have lodged numerous complaints.
I would take the car back and give the fitter a chance to repair his faults that you have pointed out, otherwise contact AAFRB

Thats one of the worst installs I have ever seen!
Interesting thing but. My old 300a set up on my old runner with the top hat setup had the old pull cable seperator. It was an old old set up. My bro had the same set up fitted to his Bronco earlier this year but there is no cable. It is a vacuum operated unit.
When he asked he was informed that his way is the new setup and they stopped fitting the cable setup after they did the gas conversion on the Ark!
So the question is is your gear brand brand new or reco'd and nicely cleaned up secondhand gear?
Either bore it right up them. It is shite!

That was my first thought regarding the 300a, hence why i assumed it was a second hand system.mattsluxtruck wrote:Thats one of the worst installs I have ever seen!

I was going to mention the same thing; I've got the pull cable too but it is a pretty old installation, it's certainly not something I would expect to see installed brand new today.mattsluxtruck wrote:Thats one of the worst installs I have ever seen!

I am not sure I'd be taking it back there, it's so bad that it might be better to go straight to some kind of authority with it, eg whoever certifies LPG installers in your state, or the equivalent of the VACC where you are.
The reason I say this is that it's a crap install that is crap beyond the normal shoddiness I would want a mechanic to tidy up, it is really pretty farking incompetent and dangerous. It's not even backyarder quality.
edit: sorry just saw viet's link... if that AAFRB is the body that licenses LPG installers nationally then I would send them the photos etc on Monday and ask them what they recommend you do. Tell them that given that the air filter is not even fastened in any way you are concerned about driving the vehicle.
This is not legal advice.
i was a gas fitter and this was why i got out to many people doing shoddy work and undercuting me . only drive it back on petrol mate and i would tell them how upset u are and give them a chance to fix it right . when i fitted gas i worked on the prince able that when u lifted the bonnet of that car it should look like it was fitted in the factory takes longer cost more . but there is no excuse for work that is that dodge.
it will go or it will blow
Get a refund mate and get a Sprint Gas system installed
I have dealt with my old Mav with the Sprint Gas and Mates GQ with the Impco. same year model, his had less K's than mine
He has nothing but problems with Impco setup, the cable you have to remember to pull each time on petrol. the Impco converter doesn't tune as well as teh Sprint gas and the Impco lets less air get to the engine, starving it on gas and fuel
we did a test with the 2 cars, getting them to 100K's as fast as we could, i drove both and then he did, he said that mine ran rings around his, Prob why i could run 35's with mine stock geared and get up real steep hills on the F3 freeway at 110K's in 4th and keep going while he was back to around 95 and on 33's

probably different lift aswell
both systems work very well, when tuned correctly.
impco gear is hard to beat for reliability.

Mate that sucks.
I have been fitting patrols for many years and I have mostly used impco on them for reliability. The issues you are having are purely due to fittment.
If you find they are not fixing it ( I doubt they will be able to judging by their work) you can come and see me at work and we can get something sorted. I know the head dude at the AAFRB and have been fixing many stuff ups from other workshops for him and than the aafrb will chase them up.
I would say that there are many things on your system that do not comply with the regulations so there are grounds for compensation so don't dispair!
Unfortunatly this is a very common problem at the moment with many workshops trying to cash in on the what they think is easy money.
Also don't be scared to post up who did the job. You need to let everyone know that they are not competent so more unsespecting people don't get ripped also.
If you need help you can contact me at work on 9887-1315.
Ask for Anthony.
