Rock Lights??

What are people using for rock lights. im looking at putting some in but not sure what the best option is?? as in what gives off a good amount of light but also affordable..umm not sure what is better globes or LED???

if anyone could shed some light it would be appreciated!!

i used sealed down lights,,you get a pack of 4 from bunnings ect for under $10,,cut holes where you want them & sickaflex them in,,there 12volt,
& when mounted in this fashion they sit flush with inner guard ect,,
I usually get a couple of seasons from them,ie old ones did two years of comp circute, doing every thing from OBC to ALLTERAIN CHALLENGE &
would probably still be going if I didnt rite the truck off,there still under the guards in the wreck at all 4x4 parts mindon

same idea here.. after litterally FALLING out of the zuki one dark night, i went for the bunnings light idea..(pond light actually) certainly does the job. I mounted mine in the chassis cross rails, out of the way of road debris, and in a 50mm-40mm? rubber PVC pipe adaptor.

obviously a white light is going to be alot brighter/crisper, but iv also got a set of hella fog lights on the front bar...facing either side... maybe vulnerable but for free and I have to at least TRY to break em...

12v downlights - I actually bought some, but I have been told they get VERY hot. Is that true? The reason I got them was they were recomended on here for interior lights...but I think they'll get too hot? Would be ok for crawling lights I guess

i've got the cheepys from SUpercrap auto. I haven't used em at noght yet, but light up the underneath well enough.

These from Super cheap.
More sturdier with thicker glass than down lights. Except they be about $20.00 more... Are $25.00 a pair. Use a 55w H3 bulb. 3 to 4 amps each.
Good for mirror lights, reverse lights, as well as rock lights. I like them so much that Ive wasted heaps of money on them. Got 4 on the rear of me Brumby, two on the mirrors. Got two for reverse lights on me ute, two under the tray, two on mirrors, one up under front. Come with a bracket and are adjustable. Glass is fluted to give a nice wide beam. Has a drain hole facing backwards to remove any ingress of water. Rubber flange grommet thing on the rear that covers the rear of the bulb. Have yet to smash one (Does that mean I dont go hard enough?
) --- although the glass fell out of one from vibrations Im guessing. Useless made-in-china crap. Ok, don't buys these. Go grab some down lights. And yep, Im guessing that a standard 50w downlights would run hotter than a 55w H3 bulb. But Im only speculating - havent measured the temps yet --- should go do that. Be interesting to see what they both run at.

It seams as though there are a lot of people on OL that are scared of the dark...

Where can you get those strip neons they put on ricers really cheap? And would they break easy? I reckon they'd look shithot under a 4by in the bush at night with 35's or bigger.

Would be a good pisstake at the ricer boys' expense too.

Seriously, i reckon the bling bling neons would look groulse full noise hammering up the likes of shortcut 2 in the dark

I had the cheapo little spoties from supercheap but most of them broke so i'm going to put a shitload of them little supercheap fluros under it this time. There probably not as bright as my old lights but I think if I fit enough of them should work.

For $10 each it's not great loss if they fail. I will be sealing them with sealer too.

I had a few of the rubber bodied sealed beam tractor lights under my old Lux that I plan on fitting to my new one also.
They are a little bulky and only suit some mounting spots but they are fairly cheap(though not as cheap as some of the other options), tough, sealed beam so dont fill with water,nice spread pattern and are only 35watt so dont suck heaps of power if you run 6-8 of them

Here is how I had a pair of them mounted under my old ute. Also had a pair lighting behind the rear of the back tyres and a pair lighting behind the fronts and for in front of the front tyres I had a pair of the supa cheap ones shown above as they fitted into the back of the bullbar easier.

umm No not scared of the dark bud, if doing night driving and doing some difficult terrain having the under body lights allow you navi to see everything so less cahnce of breaking/damaging things!!

umm No not scared of the dark bud, if doing night driving and doing some difficult terrain having the under body lights allow you navi to see everything so less cahnce of breaking/damaging things!!

what i dont get is the guys who run rock lights but they dont use navis, so they have these lights on the passenger side of the truck lighing up a patch of ground that they cant actualy see


i can understand a light just infront of the drivers front wheel tho

well i was up in 'the lake' one night on a known suitable road.. was a bit of a dangling affair, decided to get out and inspect, and fell a meter and a half into a rut.. soooo i know why I run the side light....

and it keeps the boogy man away on those dark scary outings to....

Here's my bargin basement solution

I bought some little 2 pin holders from a lighting shop,and cable tied the wires to the body


Plug a light in,and slip a cable tie around the body of the light to hold it in position.....and wal-aa! Cheap as chips rock lights!


If they get broken,it's off to the $2 shop for another pair!


I've only had one get broken so far,and another has it's lens cracked,but still on the truck and working...Will have to be replaced soon though,but for $2....who cares!

Only upgrade I'd do is to change the cable tie to tie-wire.
Thinking along the lines of the heat generated from the light would eventually possibly melt the cable tie on a hot summers night when the vehicle is sitting idling away and lights are on --- with no air flow.

wouldnt they blow once they get wet?? either from rain or water crossings/events??

i was at the shops today and was chatting with a dude at the light shop he said i could use the solid stainless outdoor lights so its protected and water proof...but at $50 a pop it would be an expensive exercise!! what do you think??

You would be better off with the Nelson brand fully submersible pond lights, comes pre wired, with mounting bracket, and 50 watt bulb for about $22 from Bunnings. I have one completely underwater in my pond.

enuf, plus some. leds these days are bloody great. most cavers use led headlamps, and thats in pitch black where not being able to see can not only be a pain in the rear, but also kill ya....
