gq factory thermo

[GOT MUD]

i was not sure if mine was working properly so i put some power to it and it fired up so i thought i will just run it by a switch to the dash which is working okay and the truck only gets when towing up ranges etc so i thought id flick it on then etc so the Q is

anyone see any dramas with this set up ?

and should i be running a relay and how ?
at the moment power is running though a fused power staight from the battery though switch and out to the fan

any help would be great

AFAIK they run only when the Air conditioning compressor is powered up.

Does your AC work? do you have AC?

other than that, have you had the radiator out and cleaned? ( Ever?)

start with the easy stuff

from factory, they will also run when the Engine temp gets to hot. ( regardless of the AC switch

i do have AC but hardly ever use as for the over heating issue it should be fixed havnt towed anything heavy since fixing up the cooling system

the main Q i was asking is can anyone see and probs with doing it the way i said and should it have a relay and how

A AC mechanic once told me it should have a relay!
I had a problem with the clutch on the AC compressor.
The AC guys said it burnt out due to getting power being feed back to
clutch when not engaged due to air flow whilst moving?
that's what he told me anyway

not sure exactly about the GQ but in my GU there are two fans.
one comes on as soon as the aircon is used, and the other comes on only when the engine is really hot (like on 30degree plus days) but if the aircon isnt on the other one wont come on.
i would have thought they both come on.

a thermo fan will draw around 30amps.
i doubt the switch used would be able to handle that kind of current for an extended period of time. you dont want the switch or wiring to melt or catch fire because then you will have bigger problems.
its always a good idea to use a relay for anything over a couple of amps.

My temp now goes high when running very slow and in low range. Most of the problem has come about from running 35's at low pressure and the auto is having a tough time of it. Was thinking of putting a bigger thermo on the front with a manual over ride so when the hill climbing starts can put it on and leave it going til i get back to the black stuff. I have flushed the rad myself with the garden hose and changed the thermostat. But it still goes sky high. Would put a auto oil cooler on but want to see what people think.
