I know what the recomendations are for my 1994 Defender 300tdi regarding oil.
But in a diferent thread that you should use engine oil in the gearbox.
What does everyone use, Oil type, thickness, where and why?

OIL for gearbox/diffs/tcase etc
Aussie blokes love hard work, they can watch it all day!
we are talking about the R380 'box here, aren't we ?
If so, L/R used to use Auto Tranny fluid (Dexron II), but this was superceded by a specific manual trans fluid blended by Caltex/Texaco called 'Land Rover MTF 94' (catchy name, eh)
This works out as a 75w80 GL4 gear oil.
It works much better, hot or cold than an ATF or engine oil, with much better synchro performance, and hence better gear shifting. There are a number of equivalent oils now.
Here's a good site with a list of them and their specs.http://members.shaw.ca/jbarge/MTF.htm. Of these I use Castrol Syntrans, a full synthetic, as it's readily available.
Another one that a number of people use with good success is Penrites Manual gear oil Xtra light http://www.penrite.com.au/nextpage.php?navlink=db/productview.php&id=44&PHPSESSID=b3fca48844674d477b40975c1565698b.
With regards the transfer case and diffs, any old diff/gear oil works, either 75w/90, 80w/90 or straight 90 EP. I tend to use 75w/90 LS diff oil so I don't have to buy different oils between our Patrol and Defender.
Just don't ask if you should use grease or oil in the swivel pin housings. Trust me on this one, don't go there
Hope that helps.
Rick.
