Modified Toyota Insurance

Post by Skip »

Just wondering how many of you guys on here with Landcruisers, Hiluxs 4runners etc. that have different engines such as 7Ms, 1Gs etc. have got insurance cover on them? And also how many of them are registered with the different powerplants aboard?

Cheers

Just did the homework last week for my V8 conversion on a MWB Cruiser

Currently paying $550 a year with AAMI on stock vehicle. (Rating 1)

After conversion:

Just Car Insurance 131326 $590 Named drivers only market value
(Underwritten by AAMI)

DGA 03 9670 9344 $596 Any driver over 25 better agreed value
Through Aust 4x4 Ins.

Tread Lightly (TCIS) 1800 633 745 $621
Must do online application, a little harder to deal with than most.
Still waiting for policy to arrive for details

After a few phone calls these were the best I could come up with. It sounds like they will insure anything that has an engineers cert.

Hope that helps

I am with Torque. They are the underwritter the insurer is Lumley General. My wife was in insurance and she rang every one in WA and no one would touch me becuase of the V8 conversion and body lift in my 4Runner. She even tried TICS.

BTW Did you apply to the cops for permission to do the engine conversion??? Did they say you needed an engineer for the modification???

cbr: No i didnt apply, the last time I did (different conversion) they told me to just do it all, then get engineers certificate and get it in to be regoed and inspected. So I said to the guy, "what if I put a 454 in a Datsun 1200 ute, will I be able to get it regoed?" He said " I cant promise you that, you just have to do it and get it inspected."

Who did you speak to???
When I did my 5.0lt V8 conversion and body lift in the 4runner I applied to the engineering deptartment. They then asked me get an engineer to OK the power to weight difference. When they where happy with it they gave me permission to do the swap. Themn when I cam to rego it I first had to get the Manager of the technical section (Reno Marcqesi sp?) to inspect it. Once he approved it I then went over the pits to get it approved.

BTW this is on the Department and planning web site:
Modifying a vehicle without obtaining prior approval from Licensing Services is a breach of the Road Traffic (Vehicle Standards) Regulations (1977). Using or permitting to be used, a modified vehicle without this approval is a breach of the Road Traffic Act.

If you modify your vehicle without the necessary approval you may void you vehicle insurance and be liable for prosecution.

That's is why I am curious about who told you this!! As I want to get some other mods approved.

What engineer are you using?? All the engineers I have spoken to have said I need to apply first and then see them once I get appoval.

Chris.

Well if this is the case I will just do the mods, see an engineer and then go over the pits ????

I tried shannons too. They said they don't deal with 4wd, only with classic cars etc!!!

I'd say its worth going with someone who actually knows about off road so you're still insured there too.

Is there anyone who will cover you if you're not on a marked track?

What about the no competitions clause... what happens if you're doing a club Cruizerkahna or something???

cbr: I have a half completed application for vehicle modification form on me now. I thought id wait until the car was finished before completing it then going through the rest of the process. Previously a guy i talked to at the vehicle examination centre said the following:
me: "I want to put so and so engine in so and so car"
inspector: "Go on the internet get the vehicle modification form, fill it out and hand it in"
me: "ok"

So i go away and get the form and start filling it out to find out it asks for engine numbers and chassis numbers etc. which i dont have. So i rang back.

me: "how can i complete the form and hand it in when i dont even have the car or engine yet, all i want to do is find out whether i will be able to get it regoed or not, before i go to all the trouble of building the car"
guy: "sorry I can't help you with that, just go ahead and build your car and complete the application form"
me: "but i could stand to waste alot of money if the vehicle doesnt get approved"
guy: "sorry, that cannot be helped"

This is the problem with government departments, no one is held accountable and no one gives a $hit. When it was originally time to get my import landy regoed, the first time i rang I was told because the car was an import I would need to bring it into the inspection centre between 7am and 10am. The next time I rang on another issue I wanted them to confirm this, but then I was told to bring it any opening hours. I rang again to confirm this and the next person said yes bring it in anytime.

So i arrange my 48 hour temp permit, go in there at 2.00pm and the lady said, "Oh it's an import, you will have to come back Monday between 7am and 10am" I was fuming and got angry at them for jerking me around so they agreed to inspect it that day.

Ohwell, whinge finished, is all the problems I have with the DPI. Hopefully things will go smoothly with this car.

lookin4a4b: When you were with shannon's did you have to join a car club to get insurance? My mate recently applied with them to insure a Nissan 180SX, they told him he would have to join a club.

cbr: I dont have an engineer yet, I wish i was a member of the automible institute then I could pass the vehicle off myself

Yea very frustrating, Every one you speak to you get a different answer. Been there done that :x

I hope every thing goes well, let me know when you get an engineer and go over the pits.
