Vitara gearbox broken piece

Post by ferozamaniac »

Hello Vitara experts. Yesterday coming back from a muddy day a friends of mine had a problem with the gearbox of the Vitara. Its a 99 model VItara. The problem started when he had a diffult gearing and some loud noise. Once he went back home he opened tha gearboc and he found this.

Will the trasnfer survive until we get fix it?

The part that is broken is called a synchronizer key , it is part of the hub (or selector hub) that locks into the slots around the synchronizer ring.

It can be fixed.

you say transfer and gearbox , im assuming it is in the gearbox and not transfer case.

in my opinion .. one of the springs that hold the three of these synchronizer keys in place has broken allowing them to fall out of place , probably find another 2 in there when the box gets opened up.

you will have to dismantle the box and see what has caused it to break , or if anything else has been damaged , the parts are available , when you get some more pics of anything else that is floating in there (thanks for the pic it was a great help) . when you do this i'll be able to help you out with any of the bits you need .

Finally the noise was not coming from the gearbox but from the axle. We fixed it and now it has no problem. My friend decided when the transfer dies he will put a transfer from a 8v Vitara which has lower gearing than his 16v. Will that work out???

There is no difference in Vitara t-case gearing between any of the models or years unless someone has fitted some crawler gears to it.

The manuals are all the same, the only difference in gearing is in the diffs. The 8v box will bolt up to a 16V motor no worries.
