I have a 2LT with a cracked 3L head my mate works in a shop that among other things weld heads, he has offered to weld mine which i have decided to. It has three cracks between the valves on cyl 1,2,4 (when i do something i do it right) my mate will be cutting out the cracks heating the head and welding i have cleaned it all up and removed the valve sleeves on those cylinders.
1. tho the valve sleeves are still in reasonable condition should they be replaced and if so how much
2. how do you tell how much the head has left to be machined
3. Is there anything you think i should no

Re: Welding cracked head
do you mean the valve seats? yes, replace them. replace the precombustion chambers, too.dirty dirty 4x4 wrote: 1. tho the valve sleeves are still in reasonable condition should they be replaced and if so how much
there is NO margin on those heads for machining. you might be able to take off 0.1 - 0.2mm and get away with it but it is very, very likely that with new valve seats plus anythign removed from the head surface, the pistons and valves will become very, very close friends. there should be no need to machine the whole head, just flycut any excess weld off.dirty dirty 4x4 wrote: 2. how do you tell how much the head has left to be machined
sell the car as soon as this repair is complete. it will crack again.dirty dirty 4x4 wrote: 3. Is there anything you think i should no

Wanted: Car trailer or beaver tail truck, let me know what you got
my other option is a new head can pick one up for $550 bare and put my crap and a 3L cam in and get it set up, does anyone know what sort of price i will be looking at to get it done

this is a far better option. the labour is more or less the same as with the weld job, the labour component would be around the $600 plus or minus $100 region.dirty dirty 4x4 wrote:my other option is a new head can pick one up for $550 bare and put my crap and a 3L cam in and get it set up, does anyone know what sort of price i will be looking at to get it done
