Which Radiator
Hey there experienced ones.
Ok my dilemna is as follows. building myself up an Fj40 comp truck.
with a fuel injected 304 V8 holden engine.
the 2 options i have so far for radiators are:
a 75/80 series diesel radiator. got this tip from daz who ran a 383 in a fj40. this option would be solid i imagine with au falcon twin thermos behind it. might get abit pricey though.
other option was a VR/VT V8 radiator with factory thermo fans on it.
cheaper option and they obviously cool the 5litre ok in a bommodore.
is there a better option i dunno about???
it will be front mounted.
cost is a problem. so cheap is good.
be used in all terrain kind of events.
Cheers

work out if you could afford to replace a cooked engine, and when you do, saving a bit more to do it right is probably the idea.DIRTY ROCK STAR wrote:a 75/80 series diesel radiator. got this tip from daz who ran a 383 in a fj40. this option would be solid i imagine with au falcon twin thermos behind it. might get abit pricey though.

im taking that as a "no dont buy the commodore radiator"bogged wrote:work out if you could afford to replace a cooked engine, and when you do, saving a bit more to do it right is probably the idea.DIRTY ROCK STAR wrote:a 75/80 series diesel radiator. got this tip from daz who ran a 383 in a fj40. this option would be solid i imagine with au falcon twin thermos behind it. might get abit pricey though.

Have a look at a NEW BF falcon rad and fan setup. I haven't checked them out myself yet so don't know if this is true or not, but they are supposedly a single fan that moves just as much if not more air then the au twin fans. The biggest benefit is the BF one is meant to draw a bucket load less amps then the twin au fans. Twin AU fans draw over 30amps EACH on start up.
Otherwise an 80 series rad with the AU fans is very hard to beat.

hey DRS, im running a 304 in my lux and im running a standard V8 radiator with a new core and a constant engine fan and normally it runs normal temp, (though i have had it off the gauge a couple of times on the beach on very hot days and its never missed a beat.
the V8s run pretty hot compared to most cars (holden say normal operating temp for this motor is 90-105), and they are a full cast iron motor and dont suffer as much as one with alloy heads.

Re: Which Radiator
In the V8 models, the first Commodore to have thermatic fans from factory was the VT. The VR and VS both had viscous fans still.DIRTY ROCK STAR wrote: other option was a VR/VT V8 radiator with factory thermo fans on it.

I think the radiator used standard will provide adequate cooling, as it was designed especially for it. And Commo parts are fairly cheap

Good luck Twon!
i'd be rushing out and buying an IFS rocky
if money is tight then id say the camrydoor radiators as they are a lot easier to get and a fair bit cheaper too.

If your after cheap radiator see the guy at Metford Radiators.
he is a old guy and last time I spoke with him he was going to close down mid-late 2008 {no-one to take over in his family}Plus bigger companies more pressure on little guys.
But he is good and cheap and quick. Will be a shame to see him go.

A commy V8 unit with factory thermos will definately do the job. I picked one up new from the trader for $260 still in box.
Alternatively, I had a 'stadium truck' style radiator custom made by PWR on the gold coast for my turbo sierra and it cost $1300. It measures 400 x 800 xl 38mm with an alloy core, alloy end tanks with dual pass arrangement and twin 14" SPAL thermos that move 1700cfm each
Also came with an alloy shroud.

You may be thinking this is a little silly for such a small car???? Well it is. The thermos will be wired with only one coming on at a time, and if for some reason its still too hot the second will kick in on another thermal switch set slightly higher than the first. But its being rear mounted behind the cab and will have bugger all airflow, hence the large core and dual fans.
