hey how ya going i have a 92 4 runner with a 3vze in it. went for a bash at smoko and started leaking fluid out around the steering box. so it think that it has had it. how much are they 2 replace. can u buy gasket kits? are hilux boxes compatable with 4 runner. don't know much bout it so any information would be greatly appreciated. thanks

92 4 runner will be ifs 92 lux will be solid axle so the steering boxes are different best bet to buy a reco or good 2nd hand one they should all be the same so long as it comes out of a ifs lux/runner/surf but don't hold me to that, I wouldn't have a go at re-building one unless you have a fair idea about it all. Might pay to check the lines aren't split or it's not leaking out of a line fitting the line fittings just have a small o-ring on them.so just give it a quick degrease top up fluid and give it a quick run while your looking to see where it leaks

Its a common problem for the steering box to leak out the "bottom", it gets a bit of mud or grit around the bottom seal I think and this with the rotation of the shaft when steering wears it out.

If its just leaking out the bottom, you can get the box stripped down and new seals put in. It cost me $250 just for this, remove and reinstall the box was extra which you will save if you can do it yourself. Have a look at this:

Memmott's Can rebuild them, they are pretty reasonable in price.

cheers for the input guys but b4 i checked out the forum stupid me got it looked and was told i needed a rebuild so 730 bucks down the track. not so happy after seeing the seal kit 4 250. but oh well now ive learnt a expensive lesson :bad-words:
