Reground Cam Q

Post by dank »

Hey guys,

have had the cam sitting there for ages waiting to go in and now that I've got the engine out of the zook as part of my 34" swamper buildup I'm wondering whether it would be ok to put the new cam in using the original lifters that are already in the head?

I've heard that not using new or reconditioned lifters could cause some issues ? As to what those issues are I am not sure..... :? I'm probably just going to throw it in and see what happens.

THe cam is second hand and in excellent condition and I don't really know what the history of it is as to what the cam is supposed to produce power wise compared to stock. The leading edge of each cam has been reground a little like this....

SIde profile of the cam - reground cam pic is exaggerated so you get the idea

I wouldn't use a reground cam... EVER. They are a more rugged profile and give less lift than stock. (vibration and wear.)
I would never use old lifters on a new cam. They will wear the lobes prematurely.
A new cam must always be fitted with new lifters.
If you have a magnetic base(or bolt down) dial micrometer and a degree wheel you can check the advertised lift/duration/overlap of your cam.

umm i disagree partly.

i used a reground cam in my old 1.3 zook and reused the lifters fine. went well, was basically same sports cam that suzisport sell, i have the specs somewhere round here. felt more torque round the 2.5-3k mark.
