I'm going looking for an 05 triton dual cab in the next week or so :) Was going to get a club cab but they only come in pov pack trim and the missus doesn't care for manual windows :lol: Can get an 05 glx-r for 25-28k which is a lot of ute for the money and still has 2 or 3 years warranty on it :cool: Bloody toyotas couldn't come close for value :roll: Couldn't give a stuff about brand names myself... its a car not a fashion accessory :lol:

Anyway a couple of questions.

* Glx-r comes with 16 inch rims. Is this just for looks or do they have bigger brakes than the pov packs on 15's? Reason I ask is I have some 31" x-terrains I'd like to put on but they're 15's.... so can I grab some 15" sunraysia rims and use them?

* I'll be buying petrol (drove a 2.8td and thought it was a bit of a slug, not much torque). Research tells me to expect around the 13-14l/100k mark from the petrol v6. Is that about right from those who own them? How will the 31's affect that..... lots or not much? That kind of economy is fine, about the same as my commodore.

* Any thing special I should look out for besides the usual? Any common problems with them?

They seem like a really solid package. But theres bugger all info around on them as opposed to a hilux or navara. I've driven plenty of hiluxes (no navaras though) and cant for the life of me understand the reputation :roll: Every toyota I've owned or driven has been crap (4 runner needed heaps spent on maintenance, work hilux spat 2 3.0 deisels) except a 77 cressida, my first car I couldn't kill with a big stick :lol:

I'm pretty sure that all MK's came with 16 inch rims. But 15's will fit as I've got them on my MK.

31's will make little or no different to fuel economy- pretty sure the glx-r run 265-70-R16's which are pretty much a 31 inch tyre.

Biggest weakness in the MK I reckon is the gearbox- but that probably only applies to the earlier, smaller diesel gearbox. The gearbox behind the V6's are larger and stronger- just don't putt around in fifth at 60kph- at low revs this will put a lot on strain on fifth gear which may then fail.

dont rule out the 2.8td it may be slower then the v6 but as for torque the diesel eats the v6 in that department. it makes more torque then the v6 at lower revs. the 2.8td makes 294nm of torque and the v6 makes 255nm. that is straight out of my car manual. i got a triton as well. the 2.8 is a great little power plant and has gotten me places that i never thought it would go and wiped the smile off countless landcruiser owners as i pull them out of the soft stuff.

thanks triton 2.8 :) Really about the kind of driving you do though I reckon. I do less than 10000km a year and thats made up of punting around the burbs with the occasional beach trip. I never do long miles or remote trips or tow anything heavy so would never get the best out of a diesel.

I value petrol acceleration more highly for my uses and don't need to count the $ at the bowser too closely ;) If anything a diesel would annoy me a bit with my kind of uses where it lacked that acceleration I sometimes need :?

Then tweak the 2.8. :D

I know a long-term Pajero owner who had a GM 3.8V6 under the bonnet of a shorty Paj. On a club trip, on a remote beach, he lined up alongside a lwb with a tweaked 2.8. The 2.8 was never headed - and the V6 owner was a very successful off-road racer, so I doubt he gave up easily - and, last time I saw him, he was driving a 2.8td.

Yeah, the V6's are alot toeier than the oilers. If it's get up and go your after and not too worried by fuel economy I;d go the V6. Just don't go the 2.8 NON-turbo. Talking about a wet week!

The MK's are a good honest package. Pretty much what you see is what you get. Only annoying thing is no driver footrest to rest your left foot when your driving. Unless your an 8 yo it's hard to get your foot between the clutch pedal and tranny tunnel to stretch out. Thats my only gripe. And the handbrake sits on top of the centre junk box. Bit of a pain.

If had 31's and 15 inch rims on mine no dramas. Currently 245 on 16's.
