Power upgrades for GU turbo diesel??
Hi guys,
One of my mates has a GU Turbo diesel and was looking for more power out of it.
Was wondering what the best mods were for those motors?
Also what the approx cost of each mod?
Doesnt need a heap of power, but all info and power figures would appreciated.

Cheap power is to put a 3inch manderald bent (no muffler) exhaust. Then go to a mechanic and get them to turn the boost up 2 or 3psi, even though it doesnt sound like much, it just adds a little bit more pull and with the 3 inch exhaust, u can hear tghe turbo whistle . Other wise go to MTQ (formely DTS) i think, they have a power up package, i think it is just under $3000 (correct me if im wrong). And it just basicly replces everything that can be better, and it keeps good fuel consumption with somthing like 20+% power increase

Depends how much he wants to pay. You can go all out and get over 300hp at the rear wheels with truck loads of torque but he'll be looking at $20 000 plus. Or you can do what was said above and get the 3in exhaust making sure he changes the dump pipe as well to 3in. This will make better power for longer. Then you could up the boost just by buying a boost controller from an auto shop. You can safely run upto about 14 - 15 psi boost on factory turbo and engine. To get the full benifits though you should get someone to dyno the vehicle as you may need more fuel or less boost. It's just a balance thing. If it's not intercooled he could look at this as well. For example my race truck has factory engine and turbo. The mods I've done is 3in exhaust and dump pipe, PWR water/air intercooler, manual boost controler. My truck is putting out about 115Kw or 160hp at the rear wheels running 14psi boost and just a little more fuel.

Y r u replacing the turbo already, the turbo u have has so much potential, y not put $2000 to doing other mods better (like an intercooler, 3inch exhaust, dyno tune it, tweek the boost a bit) and do a good job of it, then replace the turbo later, it seems a waste of a turbo. If something is broken dont fix it (thats my moto). But hey, ill buy ure old turbo

Now I guess you are talking 4.2 as everybody seems to have presumed?
If so pump mods, 14-15psi, intercooler,3" mandrel system and dump pipe can see a TD42D producing some excellent figures

By the sounds of things the 3 inch exhaust, intercooler, 14psi and good tune would be all that was needed.
With the fuel adjustment, is that easy to do? Havnt looked into it, but any easy descriptions would be appreciated.
Does it need any upgrades or is the standard setup capable of doing the job.

You really should get the vehicle on the dyno and make sure they have a pyrometer so you don't wreck the engine and make an expensive mistake. Find out who does the dyno work for your local 4x4 places.Quadcamshorty wrote:Thanks guys.

a m8 had a 3inch exhaust put on nd the boost raised, he reckons the torque at the start of the rev range is bloody unreal, he says it is CHEAP HORSEPOWER. The boost is only put up to 12psi though. He is thinking about an intercooler and he got priced a safari one, he said it was big dollars. Stay away from safari intercoolers i have heard, too expensive

ill do it for $1000 and that is with a hefty bit of profit in my poket too. I recomend you get a series 4 RX7 intercooler. A mate put one on his 12HD. With the boost tricked up a bit, top mount and 3inch exhaust his 60 series bet my V8 landcruiser. It bloody riped

I've built a few intercoolers and I'm not a fan of the RX7 ones, when the endtanks are removed the core is quite constrictive and not very efficient in my opinion.GQ4.8coilcab wrote: I recomend you get a series 4 RX7 intercooler.

awill4x4 thanks for the tip, i didnt realise that, what would you reckon the best OE intercooler would be off a sports car, whats a WRX sti core like, i can get the top mount for $400, but you can buy massive cheap import front mounts for that amount.

Julian, the intercooler of a Nissan Pulsar GTiR isn't bad, from memory the core size is around 300mm X 350mm. I don't know what would have to be changed in regards to plumbing. Most of the I/coolers I do are custom builds so I get the cores built to size but they are expensive unfortunately.
This is my version of a top mount (custom core) I built for a guy in the Nissan Patrol club here in VIC, I have posted this pic previously but I couldn't remember which post it was.

Awill4x4, i am geussing u used a nissan bonet scoop, or did u use a bigger one, as the intercooler is a bit bigger then a factory nissan and the scoop wouldnt cover the hole area. When looking at your photo, i got an idea What if you made a custom shroud underneith the intercooler which would direct air back out through a few slits in the bonnet, then you could put a thermo fan underneith for when you a crawlin. Looking at all top mounts, they dont seem that efficient as they are asorbing the heat of the motor. With this, the air would go in, and come out of the back of the bonnet and it would be extremely efficient.

I have a safari intercooler which I got for $1650 and fitted myself. I am no mechanic but it looks too small to do that much. The reason I got it is because it came as a kit and was pretty easy to fit myself which was pretty attractive given where I live there wasn't much alternative. In hindsight I reckon I may have been better getting something else sorted whilst on holidays/doing the reli run. Also got 3" exhaust and have had it tuned off the pyro with 10.5lbs boost and it goes much better than std with better economy which with the price of fuel I am now more interested than power I reckon. Just didn't notice the difference in power after fitting the intercooler that the exhaust gave even though the bullshite safai spiel reckoned I'd be "riding a tidal wave of torque". Probably sells more than saying you'll be hit with a wave of torque akin to a ripple in the toddlers' wading pool though.

Got mine booked into ATOC in few weeks, since Gueey had his done and was very happy with the result. Althuogh the first thing he asked about was my clutch, what condition it was in..
