What he means is it's rare to find one that hasn't fallen to bits (rust killed them).

I'd love one! Does anyone know if there are repro panels available for them? In particular the roof?

We had one for many many years! My old man loved them. Actually, I think we had two when I was a little bloke. The first was Brown and white, the second was Red and white.

From what I can remember, Dad replaced the front guards with fibreglass ones (because the rust kept killing them) so I'd say that you can still source them somewhere.

Good old trucks with plently of storage in the rear!

Ours did a G-box over at Straddie one year so Dad had to borrow a ute, come home and find a box at the wrecker, bring it back then put it in - all in soft sand near the camp. He did a good job given the conditions........... I think they used a cast alloy casing and one of the gears shot out through the side of the case or something along these lines (I was pretty young).

Anyway, I reckon they're cool.

Did 55's only come in petrol?

Mum bought one while dad was away shooting and he hated the thing, he was ropeable that she had sold his beloved and cool fj40 to buy the heap of crap

His main gripe was that it was petrol and didn't have any compression to aid braking for such a heavy old truck.

I don't remember much of it except the swearing and cursing of the old man every time he drove it

I personally don't mind the look of them though

yep pretty sure there was only the fj55 which came with the 2F, 4spd, etc..

Would love to replace it with a turbo'd 3b/2h/1hz throw some 80 diffs+ coils under it and wheel the crap out of it..

reckon it would make a half decent tourer as long as you didnt take it near the beach..

I THINK the issue with the rust and the 55's is cos they use a different type of sheet metal more suseptible to rusting.. which changed around 1980's.

the only ones we got in aus were petrol motors, there were diesel ones in canada etc.

they had the single piece T case same as the 40's of the same age, which meant a cast alloy T case with no support for the idler shaft, resulting in them shooting gears out the t case.

they rust as easily as a 40, difference being that they were double skinned in a fair few places (like the guards) whereas the 40's weren't, so they trapped water a bit easier. that and there were less sold, so they are thinner on the ground today.

There is one down my way in Australind, same colour but with 35 muddies, rear wheel carrier, roof rack with shovel and hi-lift mounted, great condition and looks awesome.

Fisho, the plates look like the original WA ones, before they went yellow.

I recently went on a hard run out to ipswich with a bunch of modded sierra's. A guy turned up in one of these and went most place we did, with his whole family in the car too, lets just say it didn't look the same when it came out. Will try and find a photo.

May look clean bud, but i looked at an 88 SWB Cruiser the other day, From a distance (Like you pics) it looked very clean, But when i got up close I felt around the Bonnet (on side panels) (Popular place for rusting) And was painted over and Puttyed up , Easy to notice. But i could put my hand throught this car with a light hit . lol

This FJ55 on Ebay doesn't sound right. They never came out with a diesel. The 2H is a 4.0, not a 4.2

And those pics are taken from far away!

The earlier ones came out with the F petrol motor which was a 3.6L or something. Either that one has had a conversion or the dude is confused with the 2F 4.2 petrol. They are shocking for rust. Now I have never seen one cut into a single cab or similar, that could be quite unique.
