Hi Guys. This aint a wind up. Can you explain to me why, when you are in the land of Toyota , Nissan et all some of you are obviously Landrover nuts?
Most Aussies I speak to say Landrover don`t cut it in bush conditions or driving huge distances on highway. Apart from that don`t you all hate anything Pommie?. The spares thing aint great for you either down under.
Is it just to be different ?

Asian manufacturers don't know the meaning of the words "charm", "character" or "creative".

The toyota's and nissan's which people claim are the offroad oracle are blatant copies of the chassis design landrover introduced in the early 70's as the original rangerover.
They seperated the rear suspension top link into two and added a panhard rod, that's about it.
Up until recently your landcruisers and patrols were drum braked and leaf sprung. They rode badly and weren't flash offroad either.
Given that a 20 year old rangie walks all over a 100 series landcruiser offroad and handles better onroad (yes it's true) I don't see any evidence behind the "don't cut it in the bush or for long distance driving" statement.

Yeah it`s true everyone copies: They all seem to have copied the International Scout which was a first of it`s kind. I also think if you were ever in UK at the shows etc you would see how big the club movement is as well. Four dedicated monthly mags etc and huge aftermarket support at reasonable prices.
It`s a strange world aint it? The Japs give you bulletproof trucks that dont give much bother but you end up bored with them ........well it seems like that. I suppose it`s the same charachter you look for in a woman........who wants a Librarian when you can have a feisty temperamental little Sheila

There's no question that the Japs copied but they do the detail engineering and quality control well, even if its bland. They are also good at providing what the market wants. Land Rover have often been slow to rectify issues and respond to market needs and this has created a perception of unreliability in the general population. In relation to some issues, this is justified. The reality is that to own a Land Rover and not go broke/insane, you need to be an enthusiast and have some degree of mechanical ability and a realistic attitude to what they are and are not. Its a love/hate thing. With a Japanese 4x4, there's no emotion involved!

If only that were really true! But its not even close to the truth. Toyota does better in Oz simply because they've spent the money on a proper dealer/spare parts network Australia wide. They are also willing to be more competetive when it comes to mining/industry/agriculture with discounts etc. so there are more of them, and more second-hand. People see them in large numbers and think they must be OK - its all perception, but not necessarily reality. LR's biggest problem in Oz it that they tend to ignore their traditional and existing market base in the hunt for new markets. Once you buy a vehicle from them, they generally don't want to know you!

Some Landrover Genuine parts are expensive in UK but there are so many aftermarket alternatives. I seen brand new Genuine Range Rover Chassis the other day for £400.................try buying one for a Patrol..more like £4000. Had a Patrol here for 3yrs. I don`t think I have ever had any car with parts that were so expensive. I think the Patrol GQ is similar to Landys in some ways in that it is a rough kind of unrefined truck. I do like them and apart from rust it hasn`t needed much. Discos rust as badly here in uk.
