TD42 missing... until over 1800rpm

Post by Droid2 »

Hi Guys,
just need a hand,
did vic high country last week, but she stalled in a deep creek crossing...
flooded the motor, etc, etc,
we towed it out, pulled out 2 injectors , but couldnt get rest out, so they went back in,
then removed the glow plugs, wound her over, until no more water in the engine,
then she started 1st go,
But running it sounds like its was missing,
thinking that the removed injector was the prob, we swaped it later with a unremoved one, still no. 4 cyl is missing(no change here when you crack the fuel nut on the injector,)
i have removed the sump(No bent rod or scored boor)
all valves from the top look unbent, and the tolerance to them under the rocker is all equal...
Im not to keen on removing the head if i can help it,

any idea's guys????

-havent done a comp test yet either, was to keen to get home and pull her down,

It drove back from Vic going about 100km/h and traveled 745km to get home,
running with only 1 stop for fuel,

It runs smooth over 1800-2000rpm too...

Any help would be great?

Cheers

check the compression as it sounds like it is low on one cylender , you may have broken a ring
is there much blow by with the oil filler cap removed

its bent a rod
have it compression tested

you wont be able to tell a bent rod by looking up at it.
it wont be bent like a u :P just slight bend will be enough to drop compression in one cylinder n make it run rough.

yer,
-done filters, fuel and all oil checked,
-no blow by , engine oil pressure normal does move either.
-ive measure the rod from under side of piston to top of crank, all the same,
no scored bore,
and small steel rule against 3 different rods all sides, no difference,

- im going to wak her back together, and get it tested.

or do you think , it might be better to just replace the rods now, then back together?

only thing i can think off , if its not bend a rod, is the seal for the injectors broken, when it was taken out?

Cheers all.

hi mate the symptoms are exactly the same as mine after sucking in water and was no4 cylinder missing and i drove mine for 6 weeks like it .
Anyway ended up getting a comp test and no 4 was down about 50 % compression as a result of a bent rod and to look at the rod most people dont see that it is bent without it being pointed out
so i would be getting it tested and go from there hope for your wallets sake it is not the rod

Seen it many times, sorry to tell you but you have at least 1 bent rod, but most likely 2 bent rods!

Yes sorry mate,
i did same thing sucked water and had small miss,
6weeks later she let go.
the result was 1 very vented block.
Sorry to sound harsh but get it checked before it
cost $$$ like it did me.

Note to everone, dont trust someone else to
seal your snorkle. Check it.

Cheers Ian.

Bent rod man
Do a comp test if there is a fair amount of differance between one cylinder to another there is a fair chance thats what it will be
Pull the head off & check the piston heights

Mate, if you Can($$). replace piston and ring etc, and roll a set of bearings in.
Wold be better to have it done once not twice, and it could do more
dammage($$$) if left.

Hope all goes good.

The protrusion height needs to be checked - as the rod will invariably be a slightly different length, the piston height MUST match the others relative to the block top deck.

It's usually a matter of fitting it all up, measuring the protrusion height then getting the piston crown machined to suit the protrusion height.

If it's only one thou' under you MIGHT get away with it ... any more than 1 thou over and I would machine it.
If it's worth doing - it's worth doing to excess ...

all the gear turns up friday, new rod and bearings, gaskets etc etc.

it did blow white smoke for about the 1st 20mins, then after that nothing,
But she only seems to have done it cold,

But over all no a bad effort for a motor to travel 750km home in a straight 10hr run !

these 4.2 are tuff as, i wouldnt own anything else!!

buying a lotto ticket too soon ! :D

will give the piston and new rod a mok up friday night, hope all goes good , and deck height are within tolerence etc.!

does any1 know whats in the top end VRS kit for a Gq patrol?

Cheers
