Q :Extractors for 4.5 100 series

Post by westie »

Looking at getting some more grunt out of the cruiser as she lacks a bit on the hills with the van on and being on Lpg also.

So would like some Ideas of type and exaust set up do not mind a bit of noise but not a lot.

Was told that by fitting Extractors and a 2 1/2" exaust I would increase power and economy at the moment we work on 30lt per 100k on Lpg, but if the going is cruising then around 24lt per 100k without the van around town 30-33lt per 100k ( Missus Driving) and 24 lt per 100k hwy.

As Lpg is around half the price of pet and Dist it cost me less to do 1000k on Gas than on Dis/pet but need to fill more often that is all.

Look forward to your coments I am on the Sunshine Coast area Qld

what do you want to hear - that extractors are a magic wand that will solve all of your problems?

a COMPLETE high performance exhaust system will liberate slightly more high rpm power from your engine and may give slight gains in cruising economy, however the driver and the load are the two biggest influences of fuel economy and if you are looking for a miracle you are likely to be disappointed.

If it means anything to ya mate I have just change my 3.4 prado's exhaust from a restrictive 1 1/4" to a straight through 2 1/2" system with a set of extractors. I am using 6 ltrs less fuel per hundred kms now and although I need to throw another esinator in it to quieten it down and havent yet upped the size of the catalytic convertor I can feel a little more power but nothing to write home about.

Dumdunce is giving good advice, you won't notice a power difference unless you love to rev it which I don't but it will help with your economy.

Honestly I will be happy to put a normal muffler back in instead of a resinator mainly because the std prado exhaust manifolds are a joke and that is where the main problem lays. I wonder if the landruiser manifolds had as little thought put into them as the prado ones??

thanks guys for th reply,

power at low down is where the cruiser lacks it sees a hill and looses power, the van is only a 16' and weighs around 1600kg so there is not a lot of weight there.

I still belive that a lot of the problem is in the Gas conversion and by opening the main valve 1/8 - 1/4 every so often it is slowly getting better. both on power and economy where as before the old X-Trail towing the van did as good as the cruiser in the power stakes but the economy side was not good.

I am not a lead footed drive more the cruiser driver and drive to the conditions.

Without the Van on we get 24lt per 100 k and to me that is good concidering gas is half the price of fuel

Ive got pacemakers and 2.5 str8 thru system on my 80.

Doesnt make the lower rev range chalk and cheese but there is definately more response on take offs and smoother accelerations thru gear changes.

Uni chip adds that much more again so you end up with a very noticable improvement.

Overall it wont tear the skin off your face with but it will make you smile.

extractors will make a little more power, stuff all in economy but make it smoother and a little more free reving. My last dyno run after the diff change, mine is auto too, was 175 HP at the rear wheels with 850 ft/lb of torque. The standard dyno run before diffs, computer, exhaust, snorkel etc was 130HP at the rear wheels. I still think depending on the tyres you run you will need a regear and computer to make it more drivable so to speak. That will cost about $3500 all up there abouts. The diffs and computer is really the two things that made the real difference.

Mine runs 18 ltrs per 100km towing the Jayco and 16 without. For what it is, it is fairly ecomonical now.

The extractors will be a start but don't expect huge gains.

Hey Red Rover what sort of computer work did you have done?

What size tyres are you running to have to change diff ratios?

Am looking at buying a 80 petrol auto for towing camper so very interested to hear from people with these vehicles.

cheers
Matt

Thanks again and yes what tyres did you go down to and 18 lt Per 100k is very good on petrol.

When I do do the Extractors they will be Pace Makers and a 2 1/2 " system also the computer did you replace it or just got a chip for it.

Sorry for the dumb Q but this computer stuff is all out of my comfort zone.

I run mainly 285 BF Muds and 34 (almost 35) swampers of extremer trips. I run 4.55 diffs, see top cog up the coast. Mine are precision gears, not cheap. The computer is haltech but it thinka unichip would also be ok. The unichip doesn't have the same perameters as the haltech but u don't use them all anyway unless it's turboed etc. i also did the valve body as well in the auto. A mate drove mine after the club meeting and now thinks his which is the same car is a bucket of crap after driving mine. it's pretty responsive but the all up cost is around 5 grand to get it to go like that and get the economy. It's fairly impressive though IMO

yah by the sounds of it you are very happy with the $5000 of mods done but to me it is better spent on the road touring around and changing down a few times on the hills.

I will do the extractors and may go down a size or 2 in the tyres for a bit more pulling power. Most of what I will be doing will be on road at this stage

Put a dual map unichip on it and you will get a big improvement in economy and power. The extracters are a help, but they are not the be all....if you want them then go ahead, but you can also mod what you have and it is 90% as good as extracters...where the pipes come off the manifold and go 2 into 1, have an exhaust shop cut that out and make a proper join, ..then replace the large muffler infront of the diff with a free flow turbo muffler, not straight through.... and then the unichip. I have just rambled off 2k of mods....but if you had to start somewhere, i would say exhaust mods. Be careful, as these motors are loud when you free flow them, so get a turbo muffler not a straight through...

Wow you wonder where there the Toyota Techs were when they came up with that Idea.
Maybe they thought about splitting the Atoms coming out the engine to gain more power

I've never really posted a reply before but this topic is very interesting.

I upgraded to a 100 4.5 a few months ago and had an 80 4.5 for 9 years. I put the 80 on LPG in January and while it was cheaper to run on gas the mileage was so much worse it wasn't as good as I hoped. In the 80 I could regularly get bewteen 20-25L p/100k but on gas the best I could get was 30L and the power was definitely down on LPG.

So after a couple of weeks I had snorkel fitted to the 80 and boy was I impressed! Obviously no difference from an idle but once moving things were soooo much better. Economy got closer to petrol and power went back to normal. Thing is, on petrol it had the same improvements. Wish I had gotten a snorkel years ago!

On my 100 I went for vapor Injection and I am constantly amazaed that I get better economy running on gas than petrol. I get 20-25L p/100k on LPG and pretty much around 30 all the time on petrol.

I often tow a camper that weighs in around 1000kg and I do like the right pedal so I am pretty happy with it but I am fitting a snorkel before the christmas trip and hope I get as much of an improvement as I did with the 80.

BTW I run 265/70 H/T for around town and BFG 35's when I go play.

I'm not a mechanic so I only learn from mistakes (mine and my mates) but I reckon the factory headers can't be that bad, and yes I checked the link and saw the pics. I understand that finely tuned extractors would have to be better but what would the gain be compared with the cost...

...and "chips" are also a big cost for small gain but I guess if you can eventually do it all the difference would have to be worth it.

deegeegee.... i belive that the reason for the improvement once you fitted the snorkel is AIR flow.

Air flow on a 100 series is very critical so I have been told to lean and you will have problems valves. Once again I am no expert but has something to do with tappet adjustment.

As for the extractors and 2 1/2" system is to get the heat away from the motor as gas so much hotter the Petrol, and I asume that fitting the snorkel is alowing cold air in as well.

The main reason I posted here was that like you have very little knowledge on modern motors as I come from the 327 and 351 V8 days where they were simple to understand and tune.

we can all learn for the vast array of experiance that is availabe here.

Yep, I agree with you. I knew extra airflow was what I would get with the snorkel, I just didn't realise what a huge difference it would make compared with the cost. Having tried several things from HiClones to Slick50 I reckon a snorkel is a great "bang for buck" addition.

I have never tried a "chip" but I have tried the timing advance on the 80 and it does improve things.

These motors clearly run pretty hot so getting the exhaust out asap would have to help.

Trouble is you just don't know how good or how big a difference something will be until you have already shelled out the bucks.

Like you I will only spend so much and would rather be spending it on actually doing the trips!

PS - I was also interested to know if you had vapor injection lpg as well?

Mine is the STD setup, with a 90lt under the rearand the spare onthe roof when we go traveling around or in the back under the false floor.
As for the Injected I just could not justify the extra $$$ for such a small gain.

I agree with spending the money on trips etc rather than the mods. In most cases people are happy with the std setup. I wasn't and i figured that if i am towing and driving long distances i might as well be happy with power for the fuel it is using so i did the mods. Would i do it again yes, but still not completely finished. Head work next but i don't want to sacrifice fuel and longetivity.

snorkel and extractors will make a little difference and in the end that's what you may be happy with. Cheaper for you too. Once you start looking at dyno bills etc they add up.
