Muff or no muff?
Gots a 2.8TD lux, have just done a few mods & amongst all this I had to lop off the exhaust just under the cab & eventually re-route.Wanna know whether it is illegal to run the exhaust WITHOUT a muffler...just straight through exhaust...will this affect the gobs of power I have?Thought it would sound like a tank driving up the street, but it actually wasn't that loud, sounded kinda cool though...but just curious cause it will save me having to fab more pipe.
no you dont need to run a muffler it goes on how loud the exaust is i dont run one on my lux jus keep it quiet when near cops. the turbo keeps them quiet anyway have a mate who runs a 2.4 turbo wit no exaust sounds hot. shuldnt lose any power as da turbo provides any bak pressure

in qld it is illegal to not have one. but if u dont go over the db reading they will never check.
ps no muffs better unless u mean the pink one not the one under the car

Yes,I did read this in the ADR's reg book,it states nothing about having an actual muffler, just that the noise is to meat a particular standard DB & the pipe is to finish no shorter than 300mm past the rear-most door...just wanted some advice from what you gurus had to say...CHEERS PEOPLES!CV Smasher wrote:I dont think it is illegal in NSW as long as it is under the allowable DB reading and the pipe exits past the last opening door eg in a dual cab it will need to exit past the back doors.
If you run a decent Centre Centre straight through with louvres that don't protrude into the airstream it will keep you quite legal, sound fine, and make zero difference to flow whatsoever. If you can see straight through it end to end and the walls have slots, you are onto a good one.

NO MUFF My old 60 had a round 3" pipe from the front to the rear no muffler no resonator, it was on just over a year before i sold the truck and it sounded the shit, dont know what it would sound like on a little 4 cyl, but on the old 4.0L Turbo diesel it was hot had randoms always telling me it sounded awsome.
My 80 will sound the same in a few weeks

I can't remember the models, but if you go to an exhaust shop they generally have a pic somewhere advertising the Lukey or Walker with an arrow through it. Ask for the mild steel version of the same thing, much cheaper.tojo_runner wrote:can you please explain this a little more?me3@neuralfibre.com wrote:If you run a decent Centre Centre straight through with louvres that don't protrude into the airstream it will keep you quite legal, sound fine, and make zero difference to flow whatsoever. If you pick it up and look at it, it will either be centre centre or centre offset. Either way, you can see through it. It's just a bit of pipe with holes in it, fibreglass round the outside, then a skin.
The main thing is some cheap ones make the holes by pushing the louvres into the airflow, this is bad. The pipe inside surface should be smooth with slots / holes or if there are louvres, they should protrude into the packing, not into the airflow.
Yes it will be more than quiet enough, it will suprise you.

does anyone know the legalities for this in WA?
does the behind rearmost door count doors at rear ie. troopy?
Does the exhaust have to exit below the body? Meaning is it possible/legal to cut hole in the body to keep exhaust above sliders when exiting on side. Or does it not have to go out the side at all ie. exiting in the middle of the vehicle?
(I bent and cracked the standard exhaust and broke a mount the other weekend)
Cheers

Drive it as far as you can then sleep in it and get up and do it all again!

They count the rear barn doors as opening doors.
If you had a ute you can have it dump under the tray.
One other thing to remember is diesel soot if you dump it before the rear of the vehicle you can end up with black shit all over stuff.
As for the mufler I had a 3" system including dump pipe on my old 2.8 Lux with a straight thru centre-offset muffler and it sounds sweet! fairly quiet cruising but sounds like a truck when you give it a bit.

soot? oh u mean that stuff from petro-diesel
me use bio.
Oh well. What about exiting above the roof aka milo and trucks. Altho i guess the extra bends are not desirable but it would stop water entering the exhaust in a water crossing gone bad.

I think you'll find in most states that it is illegal not to have some sort of spark arrester in the exhaust sytem. A turbo doesn't comply with the regulation for arresting spark. There needs to be something in the exaust to stop 'hot bits' from flying out the back (or side) of your car and starting bushfires.big lux wrote:no you dont need to run a muffler it goes on how loud the exaust is i dont run one on my lux jus keep it quiet when near cops. the turbo keeps them quiet anyway have a mate who runs a 2.4 turbo wit no exaust sounds hot. shuldnt lose any power as da turbo provides any bak pressure

Qld Transport told me that if no muffler is fitted, the cruiser no longer complies with A.D.R. an quote" We will issue a defect notice for the vehicle if that is the case."
of course landing strips are legal up here in Qld what do you think we are backward or somethingAJFeroza wrote:Would a landing strip be legal in QLD?

Turbos make engines quiet. N/A petrols need muffling. low performance, low revving petrols that are too loud just sound rubbish like they're broken or badly tuned.
The only reason these guys are getting away with no mufflers is because they're turbo, and the lower revs of diesels don't amek them as noisy on the top end.
93dB is the legal limit from memory. 6dB doubles the sound pressure, so a car at 99dB is twice as loud as a car at 93dB.
