Hi
Are the front and rear diff centres in a 40 series interchangeable?

short answer is yes.
the carrier, ring gear, pinion gear, all bearings, flanges etc are identical. if you blow up your rear you can pull the front and put it in the back.
HOWEVER
some later models may have had 4-pinion carriers in the rear (stronger). since your truck had a drum brake front end this is unlikely.
I think there may be differences in the third member casting, to allow for the front diff effectively running 'backwards', to ensure adequate oil flow, but could be wrong. never had a front and rear side by side to confirm or deny.
semi floating rears are mega different though, I think they are a salisbury type, once again you're not likely to be cursed with one of these.
