Stockton Beach At Night?

Hey guys,

I am into photgraphy so I was thinking of going out one morning to get some sunrise shots at the Sygna.

I have been out twice during the day via Lavis lane with NO issues at all.

Is it harder at night? How much harder? What makes it hard? I can only assume the only difference is light? or is the sand harder to drive on at night due to dew? (haha...due to dew)

Anything extra to watch out for ? (other than fisherman on the beach obviously!)

It's fun at night. Just make sure you have good lights so you can see what you're about to drive on/over/into... Other than that, it's pretty much the same as in the daytime.

are 'good' normal high beams any good?

I am going to try to get some spotties mounted before then...but in case I don't...will normal lights be ok (they are good ones....on the road...)

I wouldn't go on without my spotties... I have 2 Lightforce 240s and 4 Hella 181 (mounted on my roof) and it was fairly well lit up.
A few times I turned the roof ones off, and it was not too bad ... but I wouldn't drive without at least my LF on.

I also have good normal beams (IPF Inserts).
I just don't think they give you the throw long enough to see what's up ahead.
The roof ones come into thier own when there is undulating terrain, as they sort of shine 'into' the hollows due to them being angled down.

Haha. I had some idiot rip into me on another forum about driving on stockton at night. Its too dangerous

Anyway. Drive slower, especially over crests of dunes. Some of them suckers are STEEP

And there's better things to photograph than that rusty jap junk.....

If you head directly from Lavis entry to the beach along the regularly used way on and then run down the beach keeping your speed to a minimum, running along with just high beam isn't going to be a great concern. Allthough any extra lighting you can have is a benefit.

I am only going to be going straight to the Sygna, not going crazy out there....

I will hopefully have my spotties to make the difference though

i had a few bad experiences driving at night mostly cost i was half full of piss and sleeping on the beech..

launching car over dunes n shit..

your not suppose to but its easier to enter down further beside soccer over only 50 m to the water but there is signs sayin no 4wds

yeah i was thinking the same you might be better down at stockton soccer oval. the track is pretty well worn.

hardest thing about lavis at night isnt seeing where your going, isnt fishermen, isnt other cars, its getting lost.
the lavis end can be very deceiving. as long as you head in one direction you will be sweet listen for the surf if you struggle. but it can be hard.
getting back to the access track can be abit harder though so make sure you have alot of fuel.

I think I will be fine with directions....I could be wrong though! haha.

I have made up a mount for spotties today..hopefully I can get wiring done next week sometime.

I was thinking I might actually need to mount one on the back? Cause reversing back done the dunes may be interesting....


It willl be daylight when we come home, so that won't be a problem

hardest thing about lavis at night isnt seeing where your going, isnt fishermen, isnt other cars, its getting lost.

Drive straight in onto the beach, hang a right at the water and head towards the Signa Easy

if your worried head in from lavis lane, its not hard to find the water from there and then head up to anna bay to get out

make sure you post them up when you get down there and take some, stockton is awsome in the morning....

some from a couple of years ago, taken with an olympus 3.2MP point and shoot, so with someone who knows what they are doing with a decent camera you should get some awsome pics

If all else fails and you're to concerned, just go up the previous afternoon and set up camp for the night.

I live a few mins from the dunes at Stockton, and often drive at
night just with hi-beams. The dunes are fine to drive on at night, just
need to go a bit slower in the bigger stuff, dropoffs can come up pretty quick and watch out for quicksand (None around at the moment)

We are only going from Lavis to the Sygna in the dark, sun will be up once we leave the Sygna, and I can find my way to Lavis in the daytime with no issues.

I think the only problem we will have is reversing back down dunes if we don't make it up (Don't know why, but I still have'nt made it up the first dune after Lavis entry, on my first attack!)

Well I wired up some spotties on the front last night, and will do one for the rear tonight, so shouldn't have any problems with lighting now

Do you drive right to the end of the Lavis entry? That is where the massive dune is located. If you turn left before this, you go out on an easy path to the beach...any decent 4x4 can make it on with ease.

Nah, I havent gone to the right (but want to one day...)

I go left, come out of the 'single track' then left over a dune, then right - straight out to water pretty much.

That 1 dune always gets me on the first run...actually...I just realised, to be fair, I've only done it once...so it was the first dune i ever hit...the second time I let my girlfriend drive...and it was her first driving my 4x4, nevermind the dune! haha but she did have enough revs....or so I thought. we got up eventually, it just seems to be very soft there.

Take note of the scissors I hang from the back of my car...I call it "The Permantor" go the Vitara!!! Look how tough those tyres look! Go the fisheye lens!

Fark, just make sure you go there during the day and know were you are going. If going in from Lavis Lane make sure you follow the poles out to the beach.

Spotties are required but end of the day more light the easier and faster you can go.

Borrowed a friends penang? 8mm fisheye. ebay job, but came out nice I reckon.
