Disconnecting 80 Series Sway Bars - Any Issues??

Hello All,

I'd like to increase the wheel travel on my 80 series, and was looking at removing the front and rear sway bars ...

Would there be any issues with doing this?? ...

Would it give me much more articulation (especially on the front)??

What are your thoughts??

I removed mine from my 4" 80. I haven't been offroad yet, but I can tell you swaybar removal had zero effect on my on road handling.

Do it, it only takes 10 minutes to get 'em both off.

I've got 4" on my 80 as well, so it should be pretty similar to yours.

You'll have to post when you've been offroad and let me know how much of a difference it makes ...

I dont think removing your front sway bar will improve articulation at all, the radius arms would limit your articulation long before the sway bar has a chance to

increased distance up a RTI ramp by 100mm by removing my sway bars (80 series with 3" lift). Put it up a ramp and see what the limiting factor is

Go for it! i hate seeing swaybars/extensions on lifted 80's :cool:

I've had both mine removed for a year now, definately a waste of space and extra weight.
4" lift here aswell.

Depends if your useing castor plates or bushes but there is SFA difference in handleing. Much better articulation.

My castor is 3 degrees out with 3deg bushes so i will be fitting plates soon but there has been nothing to write home about.

yes there is legalities, just hope that they don't notice when they inspect it.
I have removed both and it does increase articulation, but does affect body roll. i have adjustable shocks so i just wind mine up a little when on road.

Take them off you dont need them!!! But if you want to keep the front one disconects are easy as to make your self! all you need it a drill drill bits and bench or angle grinder!

Made no difference to flex on my HZJ105. I have OME longer shocks and 2" longer springs and the shocks are the limiting factor. When I dropped the shocks the travel didn't improve as the bush binding was the limiting factor. I have done less testing on the front, but disconnect one side didn't improve flex.

Dropping swaybars *may* improve traction despite not improving travel, as the weight would stay more evenly spread.

thay are there for a reason, it is illegal to remove them, but when you do, you get a better ride (softer) and a bit more articulation. The front of an 80 binds up on its own, so no bars still works on road wuite well.

Isn't an unengineered 4" lift illegal in NSW anyway ?

I have front disconnects on my (now retired) 80 and I "believe" it improves the fornt end for off-road. I haven't ever tried with the back off. My suspesion was preparde by John Zordan at 4X4 Suspecion Components and he showed me that the front gains about an inch or so of travel with the swaybar disconnected.

Trouble is the damn things are such a pain to reconnect when you aren't on a deadflat peice of bitumen that I have driven home with them still disconnected several times now and it does have more body roll.

I don't think I will bother transplanting them into my 100 because I'm just too lazy to get under and disconnect/reconnect them for such a small difference. Double lockers and 35's seem to do the trick nicely anyway.
