TOYOTA SURF RATIOS?????

Post by GQmayhem »

a mate of mine has a surf,,,,, (import) he has lifted it 2"
(IFS) coil in rear i think it's a 96 model. currently runs
30x9.5x15 tyres. he wants to run 33x10.5x15. i've herd
he should run 4.8 ratio's to help the little 2.4 turbo push
them round !!! does any one no if this is right???????????
help would be appreciated.

Have a read of his ID plate on the fire wall.

where is says Trans/axel, should have a 4 digit code starting with G###.
This refers to the rear axel only as the front diff has a 7.5" crown wheel and does not have a LSD option.
Both diffs must have the same ratio.

e.g. G255
G = 8â€

Eveything I say here is for a 96 model if it is eailier disreguard the stuff below.

96 model is a KZN 185 and a 3.0 liter not a 2.4.

It will have Coils all round and no torsion bar suspension.

If it is a 96 it will have 4.1 ratio diff as standard. The 3.0L will run 33's with the 4.1 but 4.3's would be better

It will need a 3" suspension Lift to get the 33's under it and they will still rub under compression.

Can't do a cheap body lift to help it because of the ABS, needs engineers cert to do it, even a 1" body lift.

'96 should have 16" rims. Post the model and frame numbers and I will check what it is. It's probably an earlier model hat was complianced in '96.

GQmayhem, (from personal experience) if he is going rock crawling, tell him to keep an eye on the steering (idler arm + tierod ends) as these have more angle with the lift that's going in it.
Without a locker you need to carry more speed and these parts become prone to bending.
An auto locker will help a lot, air locker better again.

He dosen't have to, but 4.88 ratio will help with fuel economy.
His speedo will be bout 10km/p/hr too slow with the 33's.
e.g. doing 100kp/h on the dash = 110kp/h on road.

If he has as auto I highly recomend he has an aux. temp gauge cause the dash one is just a rough guide.
On the dash gauge - If it hits the red, it's too late.
If it goes over half way, stop and check things.

Most important thing to do is make sure the cooling system is in A1 condition and all should be OK.

He may be aware, by uping the fuel for more power = more heat generated by the engine.

If he is looking for more power (as most of us do) and wants to throw a few bucks at it, suggest he looks into an intercooler.
Otherwise a 1UZ is

Tell him to have a read here http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/ , heaps of info.
