Couple of questions.
I am installing a dual batery set up my GUIV 4.2TDi. As it has very limited electronic components is it entirely necessary to use a smart solenoid or the like? or can I get away with just a normal isolating solenoid (cole hursee). I went to ARB today and their battery trays are quite reasonable ($110) but the complete battery kit with battery and smart solenoid comes in at about $750. I can get the battery very cheap through a mate but I am unsure about the solenoid.
When installing the turbo timer does anyone have any hints on how to wire it to ignition and power as my model has the engine immobiliser. I am reasonably competent in 12V wiring but by no means a guru.
Any comments welcome

Dual batteries and turbo timer
Re: Dual batteries and turbo timer
apparently you need a specific one for GU's with Subtanks.. Believe it or not, but that GU mate bought few weeks ago, he got one off ebay, and his subtank light stayed on all the time with the timer on.. he removed the timer, problem solved.. He contacted the dude, and apparently theres a sepearte part # for them.red80 wrote:When installing the turbo timer does anyone have any hints on how to wire it to ignition and power as my model has the engine immobiliser. Save your money, you dont need a turbo timer, I had one on GQ, but ya dont really need them..
Nah, just need to connect turbo timer to operate on both 'on' wires at ignition barrel. My zero dollar home made 45 second/3 min jobbie worked well after I discovered that there were two 'on' wires.

I thought the main reason for having a 'smart' solenoid was to protect the engine computer, but as the TD42 doesn't have one, i got a redarc smart solenoid from coventry auto parts for $99 if i remeber correctly.

Thats what I thought, the only down fall to the cole hursee is that it just seperates the two batteries when the ignition is off and then links them when it is on. If you have a flat starting battery you won't know until the accessory battery goes flat as well, then your buggered.
ARB had some turbo timers that said "sub tank models" know it makes sense, thanks.
I might still get one as I really want to look after this car for the long term and for $120 or so it is a small investment

some insurance companies wont allow them..red80 wrote:I might still get one as I really want to look after this car for the long term and for $120 or so it is a small investment
its also illegal to leave car running with nobody in it.. so you may as well sit in it with the engine running for 2-3 mins.
check first.
A few months ago we went fishing and left the Labrador boat ramp about 5am not paying much attention to the old surf idling in the car park. We arrived back at the boat ramp at 11am and it was still idling. No keys in the ignition so we presume it was a fault with the turbo timer. As we could easily open the car we stalled it. BTW we did call the police before we touched it.
