I got a problem with My 1990 toyota 4Runner
Hey,
The other day i noticed my Car had low Water in the radiator, So when i topped it up all this... Light Brown Gluggy Oily Substance floated to the top.
The car has been using a Bit of water latly, Has not been over heating, Nor have i any Leeks Of water/oil under were my car has been Parked,
My Dad seems to Think Oil in the Radiator means I have a Cracked head, But he doesnt no AsMuch as Some of You guys,
It Is a Oil Substance because no matter how much i stir it It does not mix with the water, It stays in a Bubble In the water!!!
So.. What is this Brown Oil Stuff, Why is it there!? How Do i Fix it?
About how much $ Am i up for?
Cheers
Roddy

~ Cracked head gasket
~ The Brown oily slime is Pellets Toyota use to Fix leeks in the Radiator. And if There is exess Pellets not used they Pop and Turn into a brown Sludge and Float to the top
~ You need a new Motor or posibly a re-build
~ Others Saying i need to simpley Flush my Radiator!
Cmon theres 5 different awnsers, I mean.. There Varying from spending nothing upto 6 grand for a new engine!!
Does anyone who knows what there talking about or Previously had this problem have an Awnser to my Question????
My Oil levels Are staying sturdy, Dropped a Very Very Small amount in past weeks.. Ive been 4wding alot...
Altho My Water levels Are dropping .. Not a LArge Amount, But noticabley!!!

the V6 runners had issues with the heads.
i would flush coolant first and if oil comes back, you got issues.
is the oil level going up?? this could suggest where the water is going.

The oil level Very Very Slowly Droped.. As if i didnt have a problem with it..
I have been doing lot of 4wding in past few weeks, That explains the slow loss of Oil, But i havnt been doing anything to serious..

Buy a recon head and save your money mate.
Have you taken the oil cap off and looked underneath it? If there is water in there the underside of the cap will have very similar slime in there.
Your water is entering the engine and evaporating from the breathing system.

If you have oil in the radiator, it is either a cracked head, or a head gasket blown. You have no option but to rip off the head. It will be pretty obvious if it is just the gasket, so if it is, clean up the surfaces and fit a new gasket. probably only about a 4 hour job and the only specialist tool you'll need is a tension wrench. If the gasket looks OK, then you'll need to get the head checked out for cracks or warping. Hopefully it'll only be the gasket. Good luck.

Ya, Thanks alot for your help Guys, I checked my Gasket and all in good order.. So i toook it to my Great mechanic Who Head a look over it a found a Very Minor crack in my head.
Thats the reason why the oil waas very very slowly dropping .
And my Oil was in good knick .. Because the pressure of my Oil overpowered the Water, So it couldnt enter the systtem.
Getting it fixed as we Speak.~!!!
Thanks for your Help

i used to have a 90 mod 4runner with 22r engine, had that problem, blown head gasket was the reason 2000 for reco engine then 9 months later same thing again with the reco engine, 1200 for new head, i was told that the 22r engine was well known for the head problem, so well known in fact that a local engineering place made their own aftermarket heads to suit them, after i put on new head car was fine till i swapped it for 86 lux, so much more off road friendly. as for ifs chop off all front end from chassis and go to wreckers and buy solid axle leaf spring front end (diff, axle, brakes, springs, etc) off older model lux/4runner and make up drop hangers etc to fit and bolt it all up. OR get bundera front end (coils, diff, axle, etc) and fit it all up. being coil rear maybe coil front would be nicer ride and better flex but leaf probably work out cheaper. hope this helps keep us all updated and happy modding
Okay, I got a Brand new Head put on and Flushed my Radiator and Whole System Been driving around for a Week And all seemed good, Went out camping WAAAAYY out of Town, Topped my Water up Befor i left.... And My Car Died as soon as i got to the end of the track... Didnt over heat Was running at normal Opperating Pressure and Running exelent .. I went to re-start the Car and it made a Realy loud Rattleing/Banging noise coming from inside the motor.... and Blew Smoke as if It was Burning oil. Also Has Oily/Water liquid Driping from were my Exhause attaches to my motor....
i Checked my Water. My Radiator Was Completly Empty No Water AT ALL! So i topped it up toook a hell of alot of water .. And Went to start the big Girl up again. Car Started Rattled/ Blew Smoke and Stalled again... so i re-checked my Water and after running the Engine for bout 10 seconds the Radiator was Empty Without a drop of water in it AGAIN!
So i checked my Oil And it was like Milk (Mixed with water) Pulled my Dipstick out and Instead of a little tiny black line (Bout an inch) a the bottom of the dip stick of Oil There Was about 8 Inchs of the Dip Stick Covered in a Brown Milky gunk...
So Basic.. What has gone wrong?? I have a brand new head. Timeing chain/Timeing chain cover Installed the other day. I Replaced the oil. Flushed my Radiator.. And Cooling System. What else could be the problem!?!?!?!!!!!
I thought if it wasnt the head it was most likly the block.. But a cracked Block is Very unlikly....
Any ideas people?!?!?

I think the head gasket was installed incorrectly or there was some crap on the block when re-assembled other wise problem would have the same symptoms as before (oil in water) not water in oil.
Back you go to the place who fixed it and get them to re-do the gasket and make sure the motor is not stuffed now from over heating.
PS: The temp guage will not show over heating if there is no water in the cooling system. It may have got red hot without the guage showing.....
Alec..Good Luck Dude.

well if you had a thick water oil mix in the sump nice thin flowing oil would not have gone and lubricated the motor as its supposed too. That banging noise was probably your family of conrods trying to get out of the block or something else thats been trashed due to excessive heat and minimal lubrication.
ya true.. Okay thanks for the help Guys Ill see What ma mechanic recons and if he doesnt know ill Be back for more advice on doing it myself!! haha

rebuild time
SOUNDS LIKE REBUILD TIME.......
96 hilux ex/cab,commadore v6, lokka front, lifted, 4.88's, 33's,duel fuel,trac bar,climax drop pin rear shackles..
Why Re-Build? Only problem is The head,
Guys i just dropped into my Mechainic then. He has taken it apart and the head i brought BRAND NEW from Toyota Has a Faulty Valve . The Valve has broken into 3peices and the Piston has Smashed The head up a lil bit. And taken a chunk out of it. ...
So im hoping Toyota will deal with out a fight and Pay for the Damage (a New Head and Piston) Seeming asthoo it was there faulty Head that caused the damage. ..
Ill keep ya'll updated

What a waist of time and money.
The engine is all basicly in new condition.
Everything has been fixed/replaced all it is is Toyota made a dodgy Valve on one of there heads what Made the piston blow a chunk out of my head.
Its basicly had a re-build the amount ive replaced on this car.
New head, New piston. Flush the system, Be good as new.
