WHICH RATIO FOR WHICH TYRES
WHICH RATIO FOR WHICH TYRES
i run 33's 4.1 ratios 4.2ltr diesel LWB turbo comming.
is it worth the hassel to fit 4.3's??? i do a bit of touring/hard 4x4ing.
or 4.3's and 35's??? any thoughts would be good.

x2 i wish i had gone 4.3 instead of 4.6 in mine on 35's if low range is an issue just put in crawler gearsweeman wrote:4.3 and 35's

Loved my 33" with 4.62 ... only thing was the too hogh rpm at 120 kph. And the mileage was very low, but so much torque !!!

Probly would, but it would also look a little funny don't you think?
Got my 4.625's comin, be here soon.
Not gonna fit them till i get a front locker as well, do both jobs in one go.
Was originally gonna run 35's as I've been told th gearing is equivalent to a stocker on 10r's but have since been considering 37's....

i have been thinking about the same thing lately, only i want to lengthen my gearing. my ute on 31's does 2500 or so at 110, way more than i like, i prefered the 2200 or so it did with the 35's on. but dont want to wear them out. so i was considering going longer diff gearing and putting in a set of crawler gears for 4wding.voidroid wrote:Say you were going to run standard tyres for on road to keep it legal. 35's for offroad and just run rock crawlers for the reduction in low range. Would that suffice instead of changing diff gearing?
is there any issues in this?

I have a Petrol GQ, factory was 3.9's, now I have 4.6's, and run every thing from 31's, 32's (standard size) 35's, 36's and 37's.
I wouldn't bother, even with 31's it is still slow, not worth the big expense, unless you get them cheap. Plus the speedo is about 25k's out with the road 31's or 32's.

Ive got the 4.2 diesel with stock gearing and a DTS turbo on it. When i put 33s on it was good but noticed i had lost a bit of power.Just put a 3" Beaudesert exhaust on it and got all my power back, didnt think it would make that much difference but its nice to hear the turbo spooling again.
Do all ya engine and exhaust mods first and then worry about gearing.

sounds like a fair call to do all engine and exhaust mods first,
then tyres and gearing.. i'm still trying to track down second hand
turbo manifold, as the one i have is shagged. also a turbo
air box!!!!!! the turbo is of a gu ute, it should bolt strait up
and give me enough power. im not after a race engine as in
performance. want to run around 10psi boost, should be great....

I ran 4.1's and 35's. Then went the turbo/inter/3", then went the 4.6's.
If comparing performance upgrade between the turbo and the change of ratios, the turbo won clear cut.
From my point of view, there is no way I'd go back to 4.1's or even 4.3's. Rev's are fine, and went from an original 19 litres per hundred down to a rough average of 13. Best Ive gotten out of the old girl is 10.9 (checked and doubled checked the figures)
4.6's with 37's are 2 kph out of sync between speedo and GPS.

with 4.1 ratio's and 33's my speedo to gps is out about
5klm. when 4.3's go in it should be spot on with 33's ???
our ute (GQ) 4.2turbo has 35's and 4.1's runs well on
the h\way but off road it's a little tall in the gearing.
every truck is different, but for conversation the speedo
to gps is out 8-10klm !!! but still fun....

so with 3.9's as OE (GU 4.2TD wagon ST), running 35's i should have 4.3's and not the 4.6's i have sitting on the floor all ready to go in...
Anyone want to swap? 4.3 for 4.6's??

Mate what are you seriously going to use the car for to want such low gearing?GQmayhem wrote:maybe some one can help??? is a stage one reduction
t-fer box (reduction gears) 25% ?????
i.e. are you into going slow? rock crawling if so yeah get some gears but i reckon its a waste of money. You will probably find 4.1 and 35's will be fine for normal 4wding in low range as you have diesel and its a manual.
If i was you i would get the turbo put your 35's with the 4.1 and drive it...
Then if your happy with road driving with the 4.1 leave them alone. But if you want more low range gearing go some transfers but to get your transfer gearing back to a factory ratio you will need to go 43% not the 25% as suggested.
The reason why i say this i have 4.6 and its to much, at 120 -130 its reving close to 3000rpm for touring and long drives i hate it and when im in low range its ok but i hardly use 1st low more like 2nd and 3rd as the turbo diesel has so much torque... No point wasting your money and doing things over and over do it once the first time.

mate just put the 4.6's in, will be fine. And if its too much reving for your liking, upgrade ya 35's to 37's
