Hi All,
I have a problem with a timing belt change I am hoping someone might be to help me.
I have a V6 SOHC 2001 pajero, the problem is the lower timing gear has a plate for the crank shaft sensor on it, that is offset 2 teeth from the TDC mark on the gear, the locating dowls only allow it to in this way. Now I followed the instructions in the good old haynes manual and lined the TDC mark on the gear with the mark on the housing. Put everything together then the car would not start panic time.
So I removed everything again, remembered this offset plate and timed it on the plate and not the gear, now the engine starts and runs fairly well. But it pings under load, so the timing must be out due the crank shaft sensor plate. It did not ping before I changed the belt.
Now I have a problem because I do not know what should be timed, has anyone come across this problem before?

Not sure if the motors are the same.
I done the same thing on my nl 98 3.5.I had my wise oldman look at and we bolted the aluminum front engine cover on(that pulleys and alt etc bolt to)and I was one tooth out on the crank. We then removed all lined up the cams,crank to right pos.Started from the crank feed the belt up to the right cam(passenger side) to the belt to left cam and locked it up.
Seemed to work very well for us anyway.

Thanks for you reply, did the mark on the cam shaft gear sensor plate line up with the TDC mark on the cam gear, the one on the crank shaft?
On this model the actual plate on the back is not in line with the key whole grove on the gear, there are locating pins and it is not meant to line up. So I am trying to know what mark to line up, the gear is out, the plate is out, seems I have move the gear back one tooth, in the position between the backing plate mark and the gear mark, because it is too far advanced now and the engine pings, and I have lined it up with the backing plate mark, the car does not start when I line it up with the gear mark. Very weird, I have done many timing belts and have not seen this. It looks like a mod Mitsubishi has done.

Dont know about the cam shaft sensor plates.
On the crank sensor plate it should have 2 pins or pins holes aligning it to the belt drive gear.
Maybe there was a mod done?
But I think TDC should line up on all markings

thanks for the scan, well third time apart this morning.
Yes the pins on the plate have been modified, you can see where the pins where originally but the wholes have been blanked off and moved 2 teeth around. Well I timed it first to the mark on the gear, did not started, on the mark on the plate started but pinged very badly. So this time I moved it one tooth back between the mark on the plate and the mark on the gear, when I was finished I seem to remember it looking like that, it definitely was not timed to the mark on the gear originally.
So I finished it started and took it for a run, no pinging seems to run like it did before, so I guess there is some bulletin out there from Mitsubishi explaining all this, I will give a tech a call at Mitsubishi on Monday, what a pain in the arse, I can do the timing belt now in about 1hr.

hehe I spoke to soon, it runs better, but on petrol not so good, so back to the drawing board, here are some photos of my problem, I have contacted two Mitsubishi places and they have not heard of this problem. I ordered a new plate it came without the pins, the parts guy was trying to tell me the pins come with the gear, well Mr Parts guy my plate tells me sth different.
You can clearly see my problem one of the pins has broken off but you can see where it originally was. I have marked the two timing points with white marker so you can see how it is out of line.

mmm that is a good point, yes it does have dual fuel and you are right about the gas, maybe that is why Mitsubishi does know anything about it, my uncle had the gas conversion after he brought it, I wonder if this mod was done during the fitting of the gas.
I might contact the gas place that fitted it and ask. Thanks for you the idea.

Well I called the gas place they don't do any mods, so I called Mitsubishi spoke to a technician he went through the manuals and looked for bulletins. Could not find anything, so I got a new plate and pins, timed it up like it is suppose to be and now the car runs brilliant better then it ever did, even on gas, such a weird problem, it has been their since factory by the looks of it. But I am happy it is finally fixed, no one I spoke to in Mitsubishi has ever heard of this problem.
