if you guys had the choice would you buy a swb patrol that had seen next to no 4x4 action and do it up..... or buy a preloved patrol that had been done up, had all the work done, but had a seen a fare share of the outback
is there a better choice?
is there a better choice?

Re: pre loved patrols
Id go the no 4x4 action one every day
Depends on the deal really, if you've got one of those once in a life time, never see again, save you bucks deals that will save you more money than you'll have to spend on the thing, go for it... Otherwise, its always good to know EXACTLY whats been done to a truck.
If you build it yourself, you will KNOW what parts you have on it.

x2 you'll also know the chance's of it being jumped, layed on it's side, landed at a funny angle and twisted the chassis etc are alot lower.Froon wrote:Depends on the deal really, if you've got one of those once in a life time, never see again, save you bucks deals that will save you more money than you'll have to spend on the thing, go for it... unless of course they took all their fun bit's off before they sell it
WHEN I BOUGHT MY gq Ti it was showroom shmick and now its a pig and owes me a fortune. The learning curve has been great fun and expensive but very beneficial knowledge wise.
If i was to get a new truck i'd have some gear to put on it and know exactly what to do right the first time. Aint hindsight a wonderful thing hey.
If i had a timemachine and could start over with the knowledge i have now i'd definately get something that's already built for action. There's some absolute gems around if you're lucky.
The cost of minor mechanical probs, etc. is nothing compared to the cost involved in kitting it out with accessories, mods, performance enhancements, etc. And then there's no gaurantees that the same minor mechanical probs won't occur.
I would thoroughly check all non-factory wiring or re-wire all accessories, etc. I'd hate my car to burn due to someone's bodgey wiring.

it depends on what you want it for and the exact car.
if i wanted a play truck id buy something with it all done and live with the few lil things that could go wrong.
if i wanted a tourer/family car/ dayly driver id be looking for something with less of a hard life as it would be seeing alot more use and the little gremlins and roughnss of a hard life would become a pain in the ass.
be very selective and dont be in a rush when buying either tho as there is bargans and there is some very very well polished turds on the gq market.

Need to way up the price difference as well. If you can get a modded gq with everything you want for say 2k extra then you would be stupid not to go that one, also you can tell how the previous owner has treated the car as well by what parts they used. For example mine has all new superior draglinks , tie rod adjusters, panhards etc etc , so no I know I wont have to fork out mega dollars replacing all those dodgy parts like most second hand gq's
Its NOT A FORD Its a NISSAN ....

I looked for months. I hazard 80% of the GQ 4.2 diesels in QLD are just shit. All hard lives or just not looked after lol.
And a shitty GQ is NOT a daily driver. When they are abused, boy do they turn to shit. And you don't have to take it offroad to get it to deteriorate!!! Can't stress that part enough.
I can totally understand why some people believe GQ's are overhyped shitboxes and end up buying a GU or 80 series.
id prefer to buy something that hasnt been wheeled before.
less chance of buying something with broken stuff that you will find out about later after you have bought it

As far as the diesels go - most I have seen have had a hard life, wether it had been off road or not.
I got one done up for $14,000. It had close to $14,00 of accessories on it.
Even allowing for a few grand to fix some bits and pieces, still works out cheaper.

I'd have to say, do you like working on your rig? for me half the fun is deciding what to do, and doing it my way. If your not interested in playing mechanic/welder/fabricator/ect. then buy one with all the goodies, as they will be all but free, and you can spend the money you would have used modding fixing (getting somebody to fix) anything thats shagged.
Thrashed '90 Leaf spring Maverick ute, TD42, 2" EFS lift. 36 Swampers.
There's some bargains around if you're lucky.
A mate of mine, Chpd80 recently sold his beast, full comp spec'd turboed 4.2l deisel 80series dual cab ute, race seats, harnesses, 35"simexes, radios, gps, etc, 6pt cage, tube tray, comp bar, 6hp strengthened high mount with plasme, etc, etc. This truck was tidy as and went hard. Was set up to race but never did. $19k he sold it for.
Another mate just bought a jeep wrangler, 4" lift, quick disconnects, 4.56:1 ratio diffs, warn winch, 33's, spotties, radio, high approach bullbar, etc, etc. Nice truck, we took it out on w/e and it performed well. Rarely been offroad, winch had never been used before Sunday. And they threw in a complete ARB recovery kit with everything in it brand new. Snatchy used once or twice, everything else brand spanking. $19k also.
There's a few gQ's getting around from time to time with all the goodies on them, and many have been very well looked after with even limited offroad use. One man's bling is another man's beast.
